Tennis player Marius Copil
Romania’s lawn tennis team in the western Romanian town of Arad, on home court grabbed a 4-1 win against the similar team of Slovenia. The fixture counted towards the Davis Cup’s first round in Group 1 of the Euro-Africa zone.
On the first day of the competition taking place over March 4th-6th, ATP 202nd -seeded Marius Copil defeated ATP 160th-seeded opponent Blaz Rola, while ATP 193rd–seeded Adrian Ungur snatched a win over 181st-seeded Grega Zemlja, so Romania already had a 2-nil lead.
On Saturday, the pair made up of Florin Mergea and Horia Tecau grabbed a win in the match against the Slovenian pair made up of Blaz Rola and Grega Zemlja. The win secured Romania’s going through to the next stage, when they are pitted against the strong team of Spain, over July 15th and 17th, most likely.
On the closing day of the competition Romania played against Slovenia, Blaz Rola defeated Adrian Ungur, 6-3, 6-4, while Marius Copil snatched a win in the match he played against Tomislav Ternar, 6-3, 6-3.
For his two notable feats in the recently-held Davis Cup fixture, Radio Romania International has designated Marius Copil the Athlete of the Week.
Marius Copil was born on October 17, 1990 in the western Romanian town of Arad, which played host to the Davis Cup competition pitting Romanian against Slovenia. He took up tennis at the age of 7, while in 2008, when he was 18, Marius Copil turned pro. His favorite surface area of play is the hard court.
In August 2013, Marius Copil was 124th-seeded in the ATP rankings ,which is his career-high so far. In the doubles rankings, Marius Copil has been 182nd-seeded, since August 2015. Back then Copil jointly with Adrian Ungur won the doubles finals of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy tournament in Bucharest. After his two recent wins in the Davis Cup competition against Slovenia, Marius Copil has climbed three notches in the ATP rankings, from the 202nd position to the 199th one.
