Simona Halep
Romania’s women’s tennis team on Sunday qualified for the Fed Cup World Group. The players coached by skipper Florin Segarceanu secured a 3-1 win against Switzerland in Cluj. Simona Halep clinched two victories for the Romanian squad, a performance for which Radio Romania International has designated her Athlete of the Week.
In her first game on Saturday, Simona outperformed Victorija Golubic (WTA 115th). The match wasn’t an easy one though, and Golubic gave the Romanian challenger a good run for her money. Halep made a comeback from 3-1 to win the first set 6-3, but Golubic dominated the second set, which she eventually won 6-1. The third set was claimed by the Romanian, 6-1, and Halep also won the game.
In the second match of the day, Irina Camelia Begu (WTA 38th) outperformed Timea Bacsinszky in 2 sets 6-4, 6-1.
In the first game on Sunday, Simona Halep scored the victory point for the Romanians, with a 2-set win 6-2, 6-1 against the veteran of the Swiss squad, Patty Schnyder. In the last double game, which was no longer relevant in the overall score, the Swiss pair made up of Viktorja Golubic and Jil Teichmann defeated the Romanians Sorana Cirstea and Mihaela Buzarnescu, 0-6, 6-0 and 10-6 in a super tiebreaker.
Simona Halep is the best tennis player Romania has ever had. Born on September 27th 1991 in Constanta, she made her debut in major tennis competitions in 2006, when she played her first ITF games. In 2010 she joined the world’s top 100 players and in October 2017 ranked first in the WTA ranking, a position she has held for 25 weeks.
