The BRD Nastase - Tiriac Trophy has been Romania’s most important tennis tournament in the past 20 years.
The singles trophy in the present edition went to Spanish Guillermo Garcia – Lopez, who outperformed Czech Jiri Vesely in two sets in the finals. The doubles game was won by Romanian pair Marius Copil / Adrian Ungur, who secured a three-set win against Nicholas Monroe from the USA and Artem Sitak from New Zealand. For this performance, Radio Romania International has designated Marius Copil and Adrian Ungur Athletes of the Week.
The two entered the main draw thanks to a wild card from the organizers. They claimed the first round with a two set win 6-1, 6-2 against Australian Chris Guccione and Brazilian Andre Sa after only 50 minutes of play. In the quarters, they clinched a surprising win against the pair made up of Romanian Florin Mergea and Indian Rohan Bopanna, who remained the main favourites after the withdrawal of Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer. Copil and Ungur won the quarters in two sets 6-4, 7-6 and eliminated two Brits in the semis, Colin Fleming Jonathan Marray 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 making it to their first ATP finals. Their victory on Sunday has brought them a check of 24, 280 euros as well as 250 ATP points.
Marius Copil was born on October 17th 1990 in Arad, western Romania and turned professional in 2008. He made it up to the 124th position in the world standings, where he is now ranking 180th. In the doubles rankings, he is on the 194th position, which is the best position in his career so far.
Just like Copil, Adrian Ungur is a member of Romania’s Davis Cup team. He was born in Pitesti, southern Romania, on January 22nd 1985 and turned professional in 2003. In 2012 he made it to the 79th position in the world standings, but he eventually went down to the 197th position. In the doubles contests Ungur is ranking 103rd, the best place in his career so far.
