FC Voluntari managed to remain in Romania's first football league after a play-off win against Chindia Targoviste. Voluntari won the away play-off match in the penalty shoot-out. Voluntari had secured a one-nil victory in the first match but Denis Ciobotariu leveled the points for Chindia in the 67th minute of the second match. Florin Cernat, Laurentiu Marinescu and Mircea Leasa scored three times for the visitors in the penalty shootout. Chindia missed three shots, two of them being deflected by goalie Mihai Dinca.
Voluntari had also won a play-off to remain in the first football league in 2016 when they outperformed UTA. Chindia blew their chances to come back to the first stage of the Romanian football after an absence of 20 years. Two second-leaguers, Dunarea Galati and FC Hermannstadt have joined the fist football division, while Juventus Bucharest and Poli Timisoara have been demoted.
Edward Iordanescu is the new headcoach of the national football champion CFR Cluj. He was introduced on Wednesday by the club's president Iuliu Muresan who also announced the signing of a three-year contract. Muresan has thus replaced Dan Petrescu who is currently training Chinese side Guizhou Hengfeng. Iordanescu told a news conference that his contract with Cluj honors him and that he wants to consolidate the lineup Petrescu put up at CFR.
Over June 17th and 27th CFR is training in Brasov, central Romania for the new football season. CFR's Kevin Boli has been transferred to the Chinese side coached by Petrescu in exchange for 2.7 million euros. According to Digisport channel the sides are also negotiating for the transfer of Ciprian Deac. (translated by Danitel Bilt)
