Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu starts campaign to support junior tennis across the country.
Romania’s best tennis player in recent years, Victor Hanescu, has come to be known outside the tennis court as well. This week Hanescu has met young tennis players in the central Transylvanian city of Cluj-Napoca. Almost 300 children and junior tennis players took part in a meeting with Victor Hanescu, as part of the campaign “Every champion has to start somewhere” initiated by the tennis player with the aim of supporting Romanian tennis.
A conference was held during the campaign, targeting children and their parents, with Victor Hanescu answering questions from the public. Among other things, Hanescu warned parents of the consequences of putting too much pressure on their children. Hanescu says he wants to make parents aware that spending a lot of money on their children’s training does not necessarily guarantee the best of results. He urged parents to make sure their children really do like the sport they are practicing. As part of the event in Cluj, children had the chance to have a chat with Hanescu, play tennis with him, get his autograph and take pictures with him.
According to the Agerpress news agency, Hanescu launched his campaign to support junior-level tennis players in Romania in 2013. As part of the campaign, children have the chance to meet Victor Hanescu and receive specialised training.
“Judging by the level of motivation and the amount of talent I have come across all over the country” said Victor Hanescu, “I am convinced Romania has a future in world tennis. I am enthusiastic with the efforts made at local level and we plan to travel to other places across the country to support the children who have just started their carrier in tennis,” Agerpress quoted Victor Hanescu as saying.
Victor Hanescu remains Romania’s best-ranked player according to the current world rankings, where he is seeded 136th. Hanescu was born in Bucharest on July 21st, 1981. He took up tennis at the age of 7, his role models being Ilie Nastase, Goran Ivanisevic and Pete Sampras. He has been a professional tennis player since 2000. In 2001, Hanescu was officially selected for Romania’s Davis Cup team, which he only quit recently. In July 2009, Hanescu was ranked 26th in the ATP standings, which is the highest ranking he ever held in his career.
