We bring you the latest from Romanian rowing
The Lithuanian city of Trekai last week played host to the World Junior Rowing Championships. In the nations' competition, Romania came first, with a tally of two gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Winners of the gold medals were Adriana Ailincăi and Maria Tivodariu in the women's coxless pair, and the four scull crew made of Larisa Elena Roşu, Andreea Grăpinoiu, Simona Geanina Radiş and Tabita Maftei.
742 rowers from 59 countries and 258 boats registered for the competition. The six medals the juniors won in Lithuania make the third best results of Romanian rowing in 2017. We recall that in the European championships hosted by the Czech Republic in May, Romania won four medals, three of which were gold. At the World Youth Championships held in Bulgaria in July, the Romanian delegation won four other medals, two gold and two silver. We asked the president of the Romanian Rowing Federation Elisabeta Lipa if she expected such an auspicious debut in the new Olympic cycle.
Elisabeta Lipa: "Each year I expect a very good start, but it hardly ever comes out as you've expected and there's always room for the better. Even this year, when from my point of view, Romanian rowing, early into the Olympic cycle, has had very good results, I would like to see Romania winning even more medals. There are opportunities: the European championships, the junior and youth competitions, because we know all too well how much we have invested, we know our talents."
The 2017 World Seniors Championships are scheduled for late September in the US state of Florida. The event is a major test as it would be a confirmation of the right direction Romanian rowing has taken for quite some time now, Elisabeta Lipa also said.
Elisabeta Lipa: "The World Championships is the supreme test. There, we want to win as many medals as we can. Given that this year the world championships are held so far away, in the United States, we cannot afford taking too many crews there, so we will try to select the best of the best. "
