Six Romanian crews are in competition at the World Rowing Championships under way in Florida.
The American state of Florida is playing host this year to the World Rowing Championships. The races take place on the lake in the Nathan Benderson Park, near Sarasota. The competition got under way on Saturday and will end on Sunday, October 1st. Six Romanian crews are in competition.
After the heats held in the first few days, Romania's lightweight women's double sculls crew made up of Ionela-Livia Lehaci and Gianina-Elena Beleaga made it to the semifinals, having finished second in Heat 1. In the men's pair, Vlad-Dragos Aicoboae and Cosmin Pascari finished third in Heat 3 and made it to the repechage round. On Tuesday, they won the second round and qualified for the semifinals. In the women's four, Cristina-Georgiana Popescu, Alina Ligia Pop, Beatrice-Madalina Parfenie and Roxana Parascanu on Monday finished fourth in Heat 2. In the men's double sculls, Ioan Prudeanu and Marian-Florian Enache finished third in Heat 1. Both crews will go into the repechage round.
The eights races were perhaps the most eagerly expected events. In the men's eight, Romania finished third in Heat 2 and will go into the repechage round, while the women's eight will go straight into the finals, having finished ahead of Canada, the Netherlands and China in Heat 2. Moreover, their time, 6:07.320, was more than a second better than that of New Zealand, the winner of Heat 1. Under the circumstances, the Romanian crew, with Ioana Vrinceanu, Viviana-Iuliana Bejinariu, Mihaela Petrila, Denisa Tilvescu, Madalina Beres, Iuliana Popa, Adelina Bogus, Laura Oprea and cox Daniela Druncea, are now tipped for a medal.
