Romania vs. Sweden football match report
Romania scored two wins in two friendly matches held in recent days. First they won against Israel 2-1 in an away match on Saturday, then they defeated Sweden 1-nil at home in Craiova on Tuesday.
The match with Sweden began with a moment of silence as the players of both teams and the public paid tribute to the former Romanian international player Nicolae Tilihoi, who passed away on Sunday. A key member of Universitatea Craiova's golden generation in the 1980s, Tilihoi had 10 caps for the national side.
Coming back to the Romania vs. Sweden match, it had few spectacular moments in the first half, with neither team managing any shots on goal. Sweden began the second half on the attack, but missed two good scoring opportunities. 57 minutes into the match however, it was Romania's Dorin Rotariu who scored, having just come on as a substitute. Rotariu, who plays for the Belgian side Mouscron, quickly dribbled Sweden's defender Niklas Hult and sent a left-footed shot into the opposite corner of the net to give Romania the advantage. The score didn't change until the end of the game.
Let us also note that two of Romania's most talented young players made their debut in the match against Sweden: the 22-year-old defender Ionut Nedelcearu, who is currently playing in Russia for the local side in Ufa, and FCSB's striker Dennis Man, who will be 20 in August.
The match against Sweden was Romania's first on the new Ion Oblemenco stadium in Craiova and also the first to be held in this city in the last 14 years. Interestingly, Romania never lost when they played in Craiova, with 5 wins and 2 draws in their seven matches here. Last time they played in Craiova on 4th of September 2004, Romania defeated Macedonia 2-1 as part of the 2006 World Cup qualifying matches.
