The Romanian men's handball side Potaissa Turda have made it to the Challenge Cup final for the second consecutive year. The Challenge Cup is the European Handball Federation's third-tier competition for men's handball clubs. In the semi-finals, Potaissa, who are coached by Horatiu Gal, defeated the Icelandic side Vestmannaeyjar.
The Icelandic team won the first leg at home 31-28, but Potaissa won the second leg on Sunday 28-24 to reach the final. With 6 goals, Cristian Ghita was Potaissa's best scorer. In the final, Potaissa will face AEK Athens. The first match will take place on the 12th or the 13th of May in Romania and the return match on the 19th or the 20th of May in the Greek capital. In the semifinals, AEK defeated the Portuguese side Madeira Andebol, 29-21 away and 23-all in Athens. Last year, Potaissa played against the Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon. The latter won both legs to win the title, 37-29 in Portugal and 30-24 in Cluj.
Moving on to women's handball, two Romanian sides are still in action in the European competitions. In the Champions League semifinals, CSM Bucharest will face the Hungarian side Gyor. In the other semifinal, Rostov-Don from Russia face Vardar Skopje of Macedonia. The matches are played in Budapest, the Hungarian capital, on the 12th of May. The winning sides will face each other on Sunday, the 13th of May, in the final.
The EHF Cup final will see the Romanian side Sport Club Municipal Craiova take on the Norwegian side Vipers Kristiansand. The first leg is held on the 5th of May in Norway, and the return match on the 11th in Craiova. Both teams are competing for a European trophy for the first time.
