The Romanian men's handball team HC Odorhei won the Challenge Cup after defeating Liberty Seguros ABC/UMinho of Portugal 32-25 on home turf, as part of the second leg of the final match. In the first leg the Portugese side won 32-28.
This is the first trophy for the team of HC Odorhei, which is now the third Romanian team to win the Challenge Cup after Steaua Bucharest in 2006 and UCM Resita in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Andrei Mihalcea was the team's top goalscorer with 9 goals.
Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, the world's no. 3 player in women standings, advanced to the second round of Roland Garros after defeating Evgenyia Rodia of Russia, 7-5, 6-4. In the next round Halep will take on Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia.
From the world of football, let us note the results of the 33rd round of the Romanian First League. On Friday, Gaz Metan Medias outperformed Concordia Chiajna 2-nil, while Petrolul Ploiesti lost to Dinamo Bucharest nil-3 on home turf. On Saturday, Otelul from Galati grabbed a narrow 2-1 win over Universitatea Cluj, Viitorul Constanta was defeated at home by FC Brasov 2-nil, while Rapid Bucharest lost away from home to CFR Cluj 2-1. The round's last matches were played on Sunday. Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt won against Universitatea Craiova 2-1, Pandurii Targu Jiu trounced CSMS Iasi 5-2, Steaua Bucharest won 2-nil against FC Botosani, while Astra Giurgiu won 3-1 against ASA Targu Mures. Ahead of this season's last round, Steaua is now in first place with 73 points, followed by ASA Targu Mures with 71 points and CFR Cluj with 57 points.
Football side Skoda Xanthi, coached by Razvan Lucescu, lost the Greek Cup final 3-1 to Olympiakos Piraeus, the team that won the league trophy. Razvan Lucescu's team thus missed on the chance of qualifying to Europa League. Xianthi ended the domestic championship in 8th place.
The latest from rugby competitions. CSM Stiinta Baia Mare defeated CS Universitatea Prodvinalco Cluj 39-18 in a match counting towards the 9th round of the Savings Bank SuperLeague in Romania. In the other round's fixtures, CSM Olimpia Bucharest won against CSA Steaua Bucharest 42-23, while Timisoara Saracens won against CS Dinamo 34-23. Timisoara Saracens ranks first in the league standings with 33 points, followed by CSA Bucharest with 26 points and CSM Olimpia Bucharest with 19 points.
