The World Ruby Cup continued on Sunday in England with the pool D match Ireland versus Romania. Six Nations winner Ireland clinched a 44-10 win in a game they dominated entirely. The Romanians put up a good resistance but the best side eventually came to a landslide victory with six tries scored, whereas Romania managed only one. Romania vs. Ireland was watched by a record number of spectators: 89,267.
Romania will be further playing the Canadians on October 6th in Leicester and will take on Italy in Exeter on October 11th. We recall the Romanians' main goal is to win the games against Canada and Italy and rank third in pool D, which will bring them a qualification for the next World Cup edition four years from now.
Let's have a look at tennis competitions now. Romanian player Camelia Begu has won her second WTA tournament after outperforming Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus in the finals 6-3, 6-1. The win has pushed Begu from the 29th position to the 26th position in the world standings, the highest position in her career.
Romanian men handballers from Minaur Baia Mare have secured their first win in the Champions League Group D. The Romanians outperformed Motor Zaporoje of Ukraine 35-30 in a home game on Sunday. After two legs, Minaur ranks second in the group after Skjern Handbold of Denmark, the only side in the group to have won both games so far.
Romanian gymnasts Larisa Iordache and Marian Dragulescu obtained good results in the National Championships. Larisa won the finals in the uneven bars, beam and floor events, after having earlier reaped gold medals in the individual all round and the team contest together with her team mates from Dinamo Bucharest. Marian Dragulescu, who made a successful comeback at the age of 34 walked away with gold medals in the vault and bar events. Glasgow will be playing venue next month for the world championships, where the best squads could secure qualification for the 2016 Olympics.
And now football. Last weekend saw the games of the 12th leg of the first football division in Romania. The two games on Friday, Poli Timisoara vs. CSMS Iasi and ASA Targu Mures vs. CFR Cluj, ended in goalless draws. On Saturday Universitatea from Craiova held Pandurii Targu Jiu also to a draw, nil-all in a home match. Also on Saturday, Viitorul Constanta beat Petrolul Ploiesti one-nil, while on Sunday Astra secured a one-nil home win against FC Botosani. Steaua Bucharest obtained a three-one victory against FC Voluntari on National Arena.
The first squad in the standings is Astra with 24 points followed by Viitorul with 23 and Steaua with 22.
