Romanian judoka Daniel Natea won first place in the 100 plus category at the Grand Slam judo tournament in Abu Dhabi. In toe final this past Sunday, Natea defeated his challenger from Belarus, Aleksandr Vahoviak. It’s for the second time that Natea won the tournament in Abu Dhabi, after his 2014 success. In the quarterfinals, Natea defeated Brazil’s Joao Cesarino Silva by Ippon, in the semifinals he overpowered Russian contender Soslan Bostanov, while in the finals Natea outclassed Vahoviak by Waza Ari. Taking part in the Grand Slam tournament were 155 judoka from 35 countries, of which 95 in the men’s competition and 60 other in the women’s competition. We carry on with news form tennis, as on Sunday Romania’s Marius Copil won the challenger tournament in Budapest, an event with 64,000 Euro in prize money. In the finals, Copil outclassed Belgium’s Steve Darcis, 6-4, 6-2.
For Marius Copil, currently ranked 173rd in the ATP standings, it was the second challenger tournament final this year, after the one he lost in Surbiton, Great Britain. Also, it is the third men’s singles challenger title Copil has won in his career, following those in Kazan, Russia, in 2011 and in Quimper, France, in 2013. In the wake of his excellent run in Budapest, Copil skipped 38 notches in the world rankings.
And there is more from the world of tennis, since the Romanian-Belgian pair made up of Mihaela Buzărnescu and Elise Mertens won the women’s doubles of the ITF tournament in Mexico’s Tampico, an event with 50,000 dollars in prize money. In the finals, Buzarnescu and Mertens outclassed the US-British pair made up of Usue Maitane Arconada and Katie Swan, 6-0, 6-2. Buzarnescu thus added the second consecutive title to her record, as jointly with Elena Bogdan she won another 50,000-dollar tournament in Canada’s Saguenay. All told, Mihaela Buzarnescu holds five ITF doubles titles and ranks 264th in the world doubles standings.

On Saturday, CSU Craiova managed a 2-1 home win against Pandurii Targu Jiu, while Dinamo were held to a 2-all draw at home by Astra Giurgiu. On Sunday, Gaz Metan Medias grabbed a 3-1 away win against ASA Targu Mures, while in Iasi, Steaua Bucharest outclassed the local side, 2-nil. Steaua are the leader in the rankings, with 30 points, while CSU Craiova are the runner-up team, with 27 points.
