HANDBALL - In women’s handball, the Romanian side CSM Bucharest lost its away game against Denmark’s Nykobing Falster Handboldklub, 25-22, in the Champions’ League Group A. The Romanian champions still top the Group ranking, with 4 points, followed by Nykobing Falster Handboldklub with the same number of points but poorer goal average.
On Sunday, Handbal Club Zalau qualified into the third preliminary round of the EHF Cup. The Romanians defeated the Turkish team Ankara Yenimahalle, 34-29 away from home, in the second leg of the second preliminary round. The team from Zalau, coached by Gheorghe Tadici, had also won the first leg by the same goal difference.
Romania had two other teams in the second preliminary round of the EHF Cup, but they were kicked out of the competition. CSM Roman defeated Hungary’s Dunaujvaros at home, 27-25 on Sunday, but they had lost the first leg 31-24. In turn, Dunarea Braila won 28-20 against Byasen Handball Elite from Norway, but the score was not good enough to make up for the 28-18 defeat sustained by the Romanian vice-champions in the first leg.
RUGBY - Timisoara Saracens outplayed the Portuguese team Centro Desportivo Universitario de Lisboa, 45-10 in a Continental Shield match hosted by Estadio Universitario in Lisbon. This was the second win for the team from Timisoara in this competition, after the one against the Italian team Petrarca Rugby. The Romanian champions, who also won the try bonus point, scored as many as 7 tries. Continental Shield is the third most important European inter-club competition, after Champions’ Cup and Challenge Cup, with 8 teams taking part, 4 from Italy and one each from Germany, Georgia, Portugal and Romania. The Romanian champions are due to play at home against Cammi Calvisano of Italy on December 9, and on December 16 they will travel to Georgia for their last game, against the Georgian side Batumi.
FOOTBALL - This past weekend matches were also played in the Romanian League One’s 15th round. On Friday, Poli Iasi beat Gaz Metan Medias 2-0 and Universitatea Craiova outplayed Concordia Chiajna 2-1 away from home. On Saturday, Viitorul Constanta won at home against CFR Cluj, 1-0, while Juventus Bucharest defeated Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe 2-1 in Ploiesti. On Saturday, FC Voluntari played Astra Giurgiu away from home, and won 3-2, while FCSB smashed Poli Timisoara 7-0.The last game of this round, pitting FC Botosani against Dinamo Bucharest, is scheduled for Monday. Topping the charts are CFR Cluj, with 33 points, and FCSB and Universitatea Craiova with 32 points each.
