Romanian tennis player Simona Halep ends the 2017 competition year on the first position in the world rankings. Even though she had to leave the Singapore Champions Tournament in its early stages, the Romanian remains on top of the ranking thanks to the other results. The Singapore tournament trophy went to the Danish Caroline Wozniacki, who outperformed the American Venus Williams in the finals, 6-4, 6-4.
Also in tennis, the Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu has won the ITF tournament in the French city of Poitiers, a tournament with total prizes of 100,000 dollars. The Romanian outperformed her Belgian challenger Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-2 in the finals. Mihaela also played the doubles finals together with German player Nicola Geuer but lost to the pair made up of Swiss Belinda Bencic and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer.
The Romanian Bianca Pascu ranked third in the first stage of the 2017-2018 World Saber Cup, hosted by the French city of Orleans. The next World Cup stage in women’s saber will be held in the Belgian city of Sint Niklaas, over November 17th and 19th.
We move on to football now. FCSB climbed up to the first position of Romania’s first football league ranking, after their 5-2 win against Universitatea Craiova on Sunday. Former leader CFR Cluj was left one point behind FCSB after ending their home match against Gaz Metan Medias in a goalless draw.
Also in the 16th leg of the Romanian football championships, Poli Iasi secured a 3-1 win against Concordia Chiajna while on Saturday, the game between FC Volutari and Juventus Bucharest ended in a draw, nil-all. Poli Timisoara clinched a 2-1 win against Astra Giurgiu.
The leg’s last matches are due on Monday,1 when Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe takes on FC Botosani and Dinamo Bucharest is up against Viitorul Constanta.
