HANDBALL - Romanian women’s handball team CSM Bucharest on Saturday night grabbed a 39-26 home win against Danish contenders Nykobing Faster Handboldklub, in a fixture counting towards Champions League’s Group A. CSM’s top scorers were Cristina Neagu, with eight goals and Iulia Curea, who scored seven goals. During the game, CSM Bucharest set a new record of goals scored in a Champions League match, thus breaking the 33-goal record the Romanians set two years ago against Polish opponents Lublin. At the top of the table in Group A are CSM Bucharest and Slovenian team Krim Mercator Ljublijana, each team having seven points on their record sheet. Following in descending order are Danish team Nykobing Faster Handboldklub with four points and Vistal Gdynia of Poland with zero points on their record sheet. Krim Mercator are pitted against CSM Bucharest this coming Saturday. The fixture is crucial for the top position in the group.
Dinamo Bucharest sustained a 29-32 defeat against Spain’s Abanca Ademar Leon, in a fixture counting towards Champions League’s Group C. Dinamo were a whisk away from drawing level. The Spaniards had the lead for the most part of the game, Dinamo were one goal down only from their contenders, 29-30, yet Abanca managed to score two goals during the final part of the game. At the top of the table in Group C are Denmark’s Skjern Handbold and Slovenian team Gorenje Velenje, with eight points each. Following in descending order are Swiss team Kadetten Schaffhausen, with six points, Spain’s Abanca Ademar Leon and Elverum Handball of Norway, each with six points. With two points on their record sheet Dinamo Bucharest are at the bottom of the table. Their next fixture is a home game against Skjern Handbold, to be played this coming Thursday.
GYMNASTICS - As Ioana Crisan has sustained an injury, Marian Dragulescu paired up with French gymnast Marine Boyer, in the Swiss Cup, a mixed teams competition hosted by the Swiss city of Zurich this past Sunday. Giulia Steingruber and Pablo Braegger, members of Switzerland’s first team, won the competition.
FOOTBALL - In Romanian League One’s 17th round, FC Botosani grabbed a win by the narrowest of margins against FC Voluntari, 1-nil, while CSU Craiova were held to a two-all draw by Astra Giurgiu. Romania’s champion team Viitorul Constanta defeated Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe, 3-nil, while Dinamo grabbed a three-nil away win against Gaz Metan Medias. CFR Cluj won the game against CSMS Iasi, one-nil, while Football Club Steaua Bucharest, FCSB grabbed a two-one away win against Concordia Chiajna. FCSB are at the top of the table with 38 points, CFR Cluj are the runner-up team with 37 points, while 3rd placed are CSU Craiova, with 33 points.
