Romanian women's handball teams have continued their excellent run in the European Cups. In the EHF Cup on Saturday, Municipal Sports Club Craiova defeated on home court the French opponents Brest Bretagne, by the narrowest of margins, 16-15. The win against Brest has secured Craiova the top position in Group A, on a par, in terms of points, with Brest and with the Russian team Kuban Krasnodar. In the last round of the group stage, Craiova is in need of at least a draw in their away fixture against Danish contenders Randers, if the Romanians want to make headway into the EHF Cup's quarterfinals.
In Group D on Sunday, Handball Club Zalau secured at home a 25-22 win against Norwegian opponents Larvik. With Gheorge Tadici at the helm, Zalau have thus earned the top position in the group, also booking their ticket for the quarterfinals. Also on Sunday, in a Champions league match away from home, CSM Bucharest defeated the Danish team Midtjylland, 31:26. The win against the Danish team bolstered CSM's position in Main Group I.
Romania's Davis Cup team have grabbed a 4 -1 win against Luxembourg in the first round of the Europe/Africa Zone Group II. The matches were hosted by a tennis court in Piatra Neamt, in the north-east. In the first day of the confrontation on Saturday, Luxembourg's Ugo Nastasi defeated Nicolae Frunza, 7-6, 1-6, 6-3. Then, Romania's Marius Copil grabbed a 6-3, 6-2 win against Christophe Tholl. On Sunday, in the doubles, Horia Tecău and Florin Mergea defeated Raphael Calzi and Robi Tholl, 6-nil, 6-one. Later in the day, Romania's Marius Copil thrashed Ugo Nastasi, 6-1, 6-1, and in the last match of the confrontation, Bogdan Borza defeated Christophe Toll, 6-3, 6-2.
The Romanian table tennis player Bernadette Szőcs on Sunday won the Europa Top-16, tournament, held in Montreux, Switzerland. The competition brought together Europe's top-notch table tennis players. In the finals, the Romanian defeated Dutch challenger, trophy holder Jie Li. Third came another Romanian, Elisabeta Samara.
We go out with news from football, as domestic League One championship was resumed this past weekend, with fixtures counting towards the 23rd round. On Friday, in the southern Romanian town of Ploiesti, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe defeated Poli Timisoara 1-nil, 1, while in Ovidiu, in the south-east, Viitorul Constanţa we held by Astra Giurgiu to a 1-all draw. 1-1. On Saturday, Poli Iasi secured a 4-nil away win against FC Voluntari, while Football Club Steaua Bucharest, FCSB, defeated Gaz Metan Medias 2 -1. On Sunday, the match pitting FC Botosani against Juventus Bucharest ended in a blank draw, while Dinamo Bucharest were held by Universitatea Craiova to a 2-all draw.
