Our handballers have thus taken revenge for their defeat in Russia on Wednesday. They gained 6 points and the first position in the group’s rankings together with Austria but with a lower goal average. Russia ranks third in the group, with four points, while Portugal stays at the bottom of the table with no point. The first two sides will qualify for the final tournament in France along with the team which occupies the third position but has the highest number of points out of the seven European qualifying groups. Romania still has an away game in hand with Austria on May 31st and another one against Portugal at home on June 3rd.
TENNIS - Miami tournament continues without Romania’s representatives on the singles’ main draw. The situation isn’t better in the women’s doubles either as a pair made up of Irina Begu and Simona Halep was outperformed by the US challenger Raquel Atawo and German Anna-Lena Groenefeld on Sunday 6-7, 6-2, 10-8. Begu lost the single’s first round while Halep was eliminated in the third.
FOOTBALL - On Tuesday in Craiova, southern Romania, our national football side will be up against the selection of Sweden in a friendly match. On Saturday, also in a friendly, the Romanians secured a two-one win against Israel in Netanya.
