On the first day of the European Fencing Championships, the Romanian sabre fencer Bianca Pascu was defeated by Russia’s Svetlana Sheveleva in the quarter-finals, 15-12. In the qualifiers, she defeated Spain’s Lucia Martin-Portugues and Ukraine’s Olga Kharlan. Pascu won the bronze at the 2017 edition of the European Fencing Championships hosted by Tbilisi. In the men’s events, Romania’s Andrei Timoce was defeated in the second round by Harisson Nichols of Great Britain, 15-11.
The Romanian gymnast Andrei Muntean finished second in the parallel bars finals at the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup in Guimaraes, Portugal, with 14.600 points. The winner is Manrique Larduet of Cuba, with 15.100 points, while the third place went to Henji Mboya of Switzerland, with 14.350 points. In the horizontal bar event, Romania’s Vlad Cotuna finished in sixth place, with 13.300 points, while Hungary’s David Vecsernyes won the first place with 14.050 points. In the vault event, Romania’s Robert Ghiuzan qualified for the finals with the 8th highest score, but did not compete in the end.
The Romanian-British pair Mihaela Buzarnescu and Heather Watson lost to the Polish-American pair Alicja Rosolska and Abigail Spears 6-3, 7-6 in the doubles final of the grass tournament in Nottingham, UK. Buzarnescu and Watson were defeated by the third-seed pair in 1 hour and 25 minutes. This was Buzarnescu’s third doubles final this year, having won only one, in Strasbourg, together with Raluca Olaru. Buzarnescu and Watson win 180 WTA points in Nottingham. In the single’s, Buzarnescu was defeated in the quarterfinals, winning 60 WTA points.
