The Romanian delegation walked away with two medals at the recently-held World Rowing Championships, hosted by the city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria. The crew made of Ionela - Livia Cozmiuc and Gianina - Elena Beleagă won gold in the lightweight double sculls event. Stepping onto the second and the third step of the podium alongside Cozmiuc and Beleagă were the crews of the United States and the Netherlands, respectively. In the men’s coxless pair, Marius - Vasile Cozmiuc and Ciprian Tudosă walked away with gold. First came the Croatian crew, while 3rd-placed was the French crew.
We carry on with news from tennis, as the central Transylvanian city of Cluj this past weekend hosted the Davis Cup match pitting Romania against Poland. The match counted towards the promotion to the Europe-Africa Zone’s Group I, an echelon Romania was demoted from in 2017. Unfortunately, the Romanians sustained a 2-3 defeat. On the first day, on Saturday, Marius Copil outclassed Kamil Majchrzak (Maihjac) 6-2, 6-4, while Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz overpowered Adrian Ungur, 7-6, 7-5. On Sunday, the pair made of Florin Mergea and Horia Tecău secured a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win against Lukasz Kubot and Marcin Matkowski. The last men’s singles fixtures meant a string of defeats for the Romanians. Marius Copil was defeated by Hubert Hurkacz, 6-3, 6-4, secured a 6-3, 6-2 win against Adrian Ungur.
Also in Cluj, the domestic League One’s derby was played, pitting defending champions CFR Cluj against the current leader, FCSB. The match ended in a 1-all draw. FCSB’s Florinel Coman drew first blood on 23 minutes, taking advantage of the awful way one of CFR’s defenders passed the ball to their own keeper, Hungarian footballer Adam Lang. Early into the second half, on 48 minutes, CFR’s George Tucudean provided the equalizer.
In other recently-played fixtures, on Friday, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe secured a 3-nil away win against Concordia Chiajna, while Astra Giurgiu secured a 2-1 away win against Dinamo, in Bucharest. In the southern Romanian town of Calarasi, on Saturday, the local side Dunarea won the fixture against FC Botosani, 3-2. In the western Romanian town of Medias, Gaz Metan defeated Universitatea Craiova, also 3-2. In the first game on Sunday, Politehnica iasi defeated FC Voluntari away from home, also 3-2. On Monday in the round’s last game, Viitorul Constanta take on FC Hermannstadt, in the southern Romanian town of Ovidiu. FCSB are the leader in the as-it-stands table, with 15 points, followed by Astra Giurgiu, Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe and Gaz Metan Medias, each with 14 points, while third-placed are CFR, with 13 points on their record sheet.
