This weekend Romania's women’s handball team takes part in a tournament in France
This weekend the Romanian women’s handball team is taking part in a tournament hosted by France, alongside the similar teams of France, the Czech Republic and Cuba. On Thursday, as part of a friendly match, Romania lost to France 29-27. The match was preceded by a moment of silence observed in the memory of the victims of the November 13 attacks in Paris. The match was a test ahead of Romania’s participation in the World Championships in Denmark, to be held between December 5 and 20. Romania will next play Sweden on December 2. On December 4 the team will travel to Denmark.
Next it’s news from swimming. The city of Hunedoara, in central Romania, is hosting the Indoor Swimming Championships for seniors and juniors. The first day of the competition saw some remarkable performances. On Thursday, Florina Ilie set a new national record in the seniors’ competition in the 50m-breaststroke event. Ilie reached the finish in 32.18 seconds, with over a second below the previous national record of 33.25 seconds, set in 2011 by Ioana Popa. In the men’s 100m freestyle, Marius Radu matched Norbert Trandafir’s record of 2012, when he finished the race in 48.26 seconds.
Let’s now take a look at football matches counting towards the 19th round of the Romanian First League. On Friday, Pandurii Targu Jiu is playing Concordia Chiajna, while Petrolul from Ploiesti will receive visiting side CFR Cluj. On Saturday, Poli Timisoara is taking on ASA Targu Mures on home turf, while Viitorul Constanta will be playing CS Universitatea Craiova. On Sunday, CSMS Iasi is playing FC Botosani, while Steaua Bucharest will go up against Astra Giurgiu. In the round’s last match on Monday, FC Voluntari will be playing Dinamo Bucharest. Ahead of the round Astra tops the league tables with 37 points, followed by Viitorul Constanta and Pandurii Targu Jiu, each with 33 points.
