A look at the main sporting events this coming weekend.
This weekend will see the 34th edition of the European Indoor Athletics Championships. Romania’s delegation comprises 14 athletes. In last year’s edition, held in Prague, Romania grabbed 2 bronze medals – Maria Oprea in the triple jump event and Florentina Marincu in the long jump event.
On Saturday, Romania’s rugby team is taking on Russia away from home. The match will be played in Sochi and will count for the third round of Rugby Europe Championship. In the first game, the Oaks lost 38-41 to Germany, then they defeated Spain, 13-3. Romania’s next fixtures are the match against Belgium away from home on March 11 and the home game against Georgia, slated for March 19.
We move on football. Romanian champions Astra Giurgiu have secured the second position in the playoff of the Romanian First League. Marius Sumudica’s trainees defeated narrowly 3-2 CSMS Poli Iasi away from home, in postponed fixture, counting towards the 23rd round. The other teams that will advance to the playoffs will be decided in the last round of regular season, the 26th, scheduled to take place this weekend. On Saturday, Poli Timisoara will play visiting side Concordia Chiajna, while Steaua Bucharest is playing ASA Targu Mures on National Arena Stadium in Bucharest. On Sunday, Astra will take on FC Botosani, CFR Cluj will play Viitorul Constanta, CSU Craiova will play Gaz Metan Medias in Pitesti, while in the city of Drobeta Turnu Severin, Pandurii Targu Jiu will go up against Dinamo Bucharest. The last match of the round is scheduled for Monday, when FC Voluntari will play CSM Poli Iasi. Viitorul tops the league tables with 51 points, followed by Steaua with 46 points and Astra with 41.
