The sports highlights of the weekend in Romania.
The Romanian women's handball team will take on Spain on Friday and Sunday as part of two friendly matches played on home turf. Ahead of the games, Romania's Spanish coach, Ambros Martin, called up several young players to the squad, given that regular first-team players such as Paula Radulescu and Oana Manea announced they would retire from international handball.
We move on to news from rugby, as Romania are playing Georgia at home in the last fixture of the 2017 season of Rugby Europe Championship. Georgia rank first, with 18 points, followed by Romania, with 15 points. The match is extremely important to secure qualification to the 2019 World Cup scheduled to take place in Japan. Romania can qualify for the World Cup in a number of scenarios: if it ranks first in the 2017-2018 edition of Rugby Europe Championship; if Georgia ranks first and Romania second, given that Georgia already secured qualification at last year's edition of the World Cup; and finally, if it ranks third, which means it will face a third-placed team from the Pacific Tri-Nations championship in the playoffs, a tournament featuring such teams as Fiji, Samoa and Tonga. If they lose this playoff match, Romania's last chance of qualifying will be a repechage four-team tournament, where Romania will face teams from America, Africa and Asia or Oceania.
We end with news from football. This weekend will see a new round in the play-off / play-out phase of the Romanian First League. In the play-offs, after Friday's match between CFR Cluj and Astra Giurgiu, current leader Viitorul Constanta will take on runner-up Steaua Bucharest on Saturday. On Sunday, on National Arena stadium in Bucharest, Dinamo are playing CSU Craiova. In the play-out phase, on Saturday, Concordia Chiajna are taking on ASA Targu Mures away from home, while on Sunday, Gaz Metan Medias will play the visiting side FC Botosani. The round's last fixtures are scheduled on Monday: Poli Timisoara are playing FC Voluntari, while Pandurii Targu Jiu will go up against CSM Poli Iasi.
