A preview of the sports action in Romania this weekend.
FC Voluntari is the second finalist of the Romanian Football Cup, the 2016-2017 edition. On Thursday, Claudiu Niculescu's trainees drew nil-all against CSU Craiova on home turf. In the first leg, Voluntari had grabbed a 1-nil away win. The other finalist is Astra Giurgiu, the team that ousted AFC Poli Timisoara following a 4-1 win at home in the first leg and a 3-nil away win from home in the semi-finals. The final is scheduled to take place on May 27, in Ploiesti.
In other news from football, this weekend will see matches counting towards the 11th round of the football season. In Group 2, on Friday, Pandurii Targu Jiu will play ASA Targu Mures, while Poli Iasi will take on visitors from Gaz Metan Medias. On Sunday, FC Voluntari will go up against FC Botosani. In the fourth game of the round, which was played earlier on May 10, Concordia Chiajna won 3-1 against AFC Poli Timisoara.
Also this Saturday, AFC Poli Timisoara will play Dinamo Bucharest in the League Cup final, in a match hosted by National Arena stadium in Bucharest.
We move on to boxing. On Friday night, Romanian boxer Cristian Ciocan is defending his WBO heavyweight title in a boxing gala hosted by Hamburg, Germany. Ciocan's rival is the Algerian-born French boxer Zine Eddine Benmakhlouf. The Frenchman's record sheet includes 22 wins, of which 12 by KO, as well as 5 defeats. According to the sports website sport.ro, Ciocan is ranked 9th in the heavyweight standings. Anthony Joshua of Great Britain is ranked 1st, followed by Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine.
