News from domestic football competitions
It appears that we’ve had a couple of eventful days, in terms of domestic football competitions. And that is because mid-week we’ve had an intermediary round, round number five actually, in the domestic League One championship. As part of round five, this past Thursday saw the last two fixtures being played. In the western Romanian town of Medias, Gaz Metan succeeded their first win, outclassing the newly-promoted opponents, Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe, 2-1.
The derby of the round saw CFR Cluj taking on Dinamo Bucharest. CFR grabbed a hard-fought, 1-nil win, but was two men shy on the pitch for the final part of the match. CFR’s Portuguese player Mario Camora got red-booked on 83 minutes because of a rough tackle on his fellow Portuguese Filipe Nascimento, while in extra time, Argentinean Jose Emanuel Culio got yellow-booked for the second time.
Earlier this week, on Tuesday, FC Botosani outclassed Poli Timisoara on home turf, 1-nil, while Viitorul Constanta were held to a blank draw in their home game against FC Voluntari, hosted by the town of Ovidiu in the southeast. Astra Giurgiu grabbed a 1-nil win against Concordia Chiajna, then in Ploiesti, also in the south, Juventus Bucharest lost the game against CSU Craiova, nil-1. In Bucharest, FCSB were held by Poli Iasi to a 1-all draw.
Fixtures counting towards the 6th round are scheduled at the weekend. On Friday, Poli Timisoara are pitted against Viitorul Constanta. On Saturday, Concordia Chiajna play a home game against Juventus Bucharest, while on the National Arena in Bucharest FCSB face Astra Giurgiu.
On Sunday, in the southern Romanian town of Drobeta Turnu-Severin, CSU Craiova take on FC Botosani, while in Iasi, in the east, the local side Poli play Dinamo Bucharest. The last two games of the 6th round will be played on Monday, when FC Voluntari take on Gaz Metan Medias and Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe face CFR Cluj.
In the as-it-stands table, FC Botosani and CFR Cluj share the top position, with 13 points each, but with a different goal average. Third-placed are FCSB, with 11 points on their record sheet.
