Boxer Cristian Ciocan
The Romanian boxer Cristian Ciocan is the new European WBO heavyweight champion. He defeated the Turkish boxer Erkan Teper by a 12-round split decision in a professional boxing match held in the German city of Hamburg. Two judges scored in favour of the Romanian, 116-112 and 117-112, while a third judge scored in favour of the Turkish boxer 115-113. It was a close match, with the two boxers having earned an equal amount of points after 10 rounds.
Although the Turkish boxer was taller and had a bigger reach than the Romanian, with a height of 1.95 m compared with the latter's 1.88m, Ciocan landed more decisive punches in the final two rounds. He also had a more convincing performance throughout the match. Cristian Ciocan has a 20:4 win-loss record and held this title before, namely three years ago. He hopes to fight for the world title in 2017. The defeat in Hamburg was the first in Erkan Teper's career. Aged 34, he has 16 wins to his record.
For his achievement, Radio Romania International designates Cristian Ciocan the athlete of the week. He was born on the 27th of September in Galati, eastern Romania, but resides in Hamburg, Germany, where he is known as Christian Hammer. He became a professional boxer at the age of 21, in 2008. In 2006, he won the World Youth Championship in Agadir, Morocco. He is 1.88 m tall, weighs 122 kg and fights in the heavyweight category. On the 22nd of February 2013, he won the WBO title against Ukraine's Oleksiy Mazikin in his hometown of Galati. On the 23rd of August that same year, he defended his title against the Norwegian challenger Leif Larson, winning by KO in round seven.
