Handball player Yuliya Dumanska
Romanian women's handball club SCM Craiova on Friday won the EHF Cup, the second most important European inter-club competition. The team from Craiova, southern Romania, defeated Vipers Kristiansand of Norway at home, 30-25, in the second leg of the final. In the first leg the Norwegian team won 26-22.
Craiova secured the lead from the very beginning. At half time SCM had a seven-goal advantage over Vipers. On minute 38 SCM were leading 24-15. The Norwegian team upped their game into the second half, and cut the goal difference to only five goals before full time. If they scored one more goal, they would have won the Cup. However, Craiova's goalkeeper, Yuliya Dumanska, had two important saves, thus bringing the trophy to the Romanian side.
For her remarkable performance in the EHF Cup final, we have designated SCM Craiova's Yuliya Dumanska the Athlete of the Week on Radio Romania International.
Yuliya Dumanska was born in Gorodenka, Ukraine, on August 15, 1996. She started playing handball for the local team. Romanian coaches Ion and Ioana Marta discovered her in 2011 and brought her to their club, HCM Baia Mare. Dumanska played for HCM from 2012 to 2016, when she was signed by SCM Craiova.
On May 5, 2016, during an event organised by the Romanian Ministry of Youth and Sports, Yuliya Dumanska was awarded Romanian citizenship. She was then called up to the Romanian women's national team, for which she has accumulated a total of 14 caps. Yuliya Dumanska also took part in the World Handball Championships hosted by Germany in December 2017.
