A round up of the weekend’s most important sporting events.
Astra Giurgiu has got through to the third preliminary round of Europa League in football as on Thursday Astra held Zira FK of Azerbaijan to a blank draw, away from home, in a fixture counting towards the second leg of the second preliminary round. We recall that the week before Astra had secured a 3-1 home win. This coming Thursday Astra are pitted against Ukrainian contenders Oleksandria, in a fixture counting towards the third preliminary round. We recall that in the previous season Astra was the Romanian team with the most satisfactory run in the European Cups, reaching as far as the round of 16 in Europa League.
The other Romanian teams playing in the Europan Cups will prove their mettle next week. On Tuesday, in the Champions League’s third preliminary round, Football Club Steaua Bucharest, FCSB, take on Czech team Viktoria Plzen in Bucharest, while on Wednesday, Viitorul Constanta face Cyprus champions APOEL Nicosia in the south-eastern Romanian town of Ovidiu. In Europa League preliminaries in Bucharest on Thursday, Dinamo take on Athletic Bilbao on home ground, while in the south-western Romanian town of Drobeta Turnu Severin, CSU Craiova play Italy’s AC Milan.
We go out with the latest from domestic football as starting on Friday and until Monday matches are played counting towards the second round of Romanian League One. On Friday, Sepsi Sfintu Gheorghe face Juventus Bucharest, while Poli Timisoara are pitted against FCSB. In Drobeta Turnu Severin on Saturday, CSU Craiova face Concordia Chiajna, while in Cluj, CFR take on Viitorul Constanta. On home turf on Sunday, Poli Iasi play Gaz Metan Medias, while on the National Arena in Bucharest, Dinamo take on FC Botosani. The last game of the second round on Monday will see FC Voluntari taking on Astra Giurgiu.
