Das Finale, gegen die Chinesin Yiwen Sun, war dramatisch und sehr knapp. W\u00e4hrend der Regelzeit gab es nur einmal einen Unterschied von zwei Treffern zwischen den beiden Fechterinnen, n\u00e4mlich zu Beginn, als Ana-Maria Popescu 2:0 f\u00fchrte. Beide Sportlerinnen hatten Momente, in denen sie das Duell bestimmten, aber die chinesische Fechterin war am Ende besser. In den letzten Sekunden der regul\u00e4ren Spielzeit schaffte die Rum\u00e4nin den Ausgleich zum 10:10. Doch in der darauffolgenden Minute der Verl\u00e4ngerung wurde sie von ihrer Gegnerin \u00fcberrascht und verpasste zum zweiten Mal olympisches Gold. Dennoch freute sich Ana-Maria total \u00fcber ihre Silbermedaille: „Leute, ich war im olympischen Finale! Ich bin 37 Jahre alt. Mir tut der ganze K\u00f6rper weh, glaubt mir, es war eine Schinderei. Es ist die h\u00e4rteste Medaille meiner gesamten Karriere. Also ist mir das Gold, das um Suns Hals h\u00e4ngt, im Moment egal. Mich interessiert dieses kleine St\u00fcck einer Medaille, die ich f\u00fcr mich selbst wollte. Und das ist das Wichtigste. Und wenn ich in Peking nicht reif genug war, diese Medaille richtig auszukosten, so bin ich jetzt sehr happy<\/strong>„, sagte die Sportlerin nach dem Duell.<\/p>\n

Das Silber von Tokio ist die 17. Medaille, die die rum\u00e4nischen Fechterinnen und Fechter bei den Olympischen Spielen gewonnen: bisher gab es vier Mal Gold, f\u00fcnf Mal Silber und sieben Mal Bronze bei fr\u00fcheren Ausgaben gewonnen wurden.

\nMit Ausnahme der Olympia in Athen 2004 hat das Fechten bei jeder Ausgabe des neuen Jahrtausends Medaillen gewonnen. Ana-Maria Popescu, die den Sportfans besser bekannt ist unter ihrem M\u00e4dchennamen Ana-Maria Br\u00e2nz\u0103, geh\u00f6rte 2016 zu den letzten Goldmedaillengewinnern in Rio, als sie zusammen mit ihren rum\u00e4nischen Degen-Teamkolleginnen Loredana Dinu, Simona Gherman und Simona Pop siegte.

\nZu ihrer olympischen Bilanz geh\u00f6rt auch die angesprochene Silbermedaille im Einzel, die sie 2008 in Peking gewann, als sie im Finale von der Deutschen Britta Heidemann besiegt wurde. Ana-Maria hat sich f\u00fcr die Spiele in Tokio qualifiziert, nachdem sie in der Einzel-Weltrangliste des Internationalen Fechtverbandes den ersten Platz belegt hat. Ihre Teilnahme an den Olympischen Spielen stand aufgrund einer Operation am rechten Knie eine Zeit lang in Frage. Aber die Operation verlief gut, ebenso wie die anschlie\u200e\u00dfende Erholung in den besonderen Umst\u00e4nden der Coronavirus-Pandemie. Danach gelang es Ana-Maria Popescu zu der Form zur\u00fcckzufinden, die sie zu einer Star-Athletin gemacht hatte – das olympische Silber ist eine weitere Best\u00e4tigung dieser Topform.<\/p>\n
