Die offizielle Landesw\u00e4hrung Rum\u00e4niens ist der Leu<\/strong> (Mehrzahl: Lei<\/strong>), unterteilt in 100 Bani<\/strong> (ban<\/em>, pl. bani<\/em> bedeutet im Rum\u00e4nischen auch M\u00fcnze\u201c oder Geld\u201c schlechthin). Im 17. Jahrhundert waren in den historischen rum\u00e4nischen Provinzen niederl\u00e4ndische L\u00f6wentaler<\/a> (nl. Leeuwendaalder<\/em>) im Umlauf, deren Besonderheit das gepr\u00e4gte Bild eines L\u00f6wen war, der sich auf seinen Hinterpfoten aufrichtend dargestellt war. Auf dieser Grundlage wurde diese M\u00fcnze L\u00f6wentaler\u201c (rum. taler-leu<\/em>) und im modernen Rum\u00e4nien einfach nur noch Leu\u201c (L\u00f6we) genannt. Auch nachdem die niederl\u00e4ndischen Taler aus dem Verkehr zur\u00fcckgezogen wurden, blieb der Name Leu\u201c (Plural: Lei\u201c) als allgemeiner Begriff f\u00fcr M\u00fcnzen und Geld erhalten.<\/p>\n

1867 wurde der Leu die offizielle W\u00e4hrung der Vereinigten Donauf\u00fcrstent\u00fcmer Moldau und Walachei. Der allererste Leu entsprach 5 g Silber oder 0,3226 g Gold und war in 100 Bani unterteilt.<\/p>\n
