Romania wants its
\ninstitutions and businesses to take part in the reconstruction of Palestinian
\ninstitutions and the economy, said the Romanian president Klaus Iohannis on
\nThursday during talks with his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas. Romania’s
\ncontribution to the consolidation of Palestinian institutions forms part of its
\nsupport for a two-state solution that would see Israel and Palestine coexist in
\npeace and security, Klaus Iohannis explained. President Abbas expressed his
\nsatisfaction with the important role played by the graduates of Romanian
\nuniversities in Palestinian society, saying they constitute an intellectual and
\nprofessional elite with a significant contribution to Palestinian economic,
\npolitical and social life. Romania’s president on Sunday began a trip to Israel
\nand the Palestinian territories. In Jerusalem, he met his Israeli counterpart
\nReuven Rivlin, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the speaker of Israel’s
\nParliament, as well as representatives of Israeli citizens of Romanian origin.<\/p>\n

Romania’s Supreme Defence Council meets on Friday to
\ndiscuss a decision by the Constitutional Court according to which the Criminal
\nProcedure Code provision that allowed the Romanian Intelligence Service to use
\nsurveillance technology in prosecutions is unconstitutional. The intelligence
\nchief Eduard Hellvig said the ruling would have consequences with regard to
\nnational security, given the correlation between preventing threats to national
\nsecurity and counteracting related criminal phenomena. He explained the ruling
\nwould make it illegal to use the Service’s sophisticated surveillance equipment
\nto prosecute espionage and treason, terrorism, cross-border organised crime,
\ncybercrime and top-level corruption, all of which are major threats to national
\nsecurity. Hellvig also said a number of ongoing cases would be affected by the
\nruling, in particular those involving national security crimes. <\/p>\n

The
\nSocial Democratic MP Cristian Rizea is on bail subject to legal restrictions
\npending trial. Earlier, the Chamber of Deputies approved a National
\nAnticorruption Directorate request to detain him, while rejecting the request
\nfor his arrest. Rizea is accused of influence peddling, money laundering and
\npersuading others to commit perjury. Prosecutors say he received 300,000
\neuros from an American citizen to use his influence in a case related to the
\nreturn of property nationalised by the former communist regime. Rizea rejects
\nthe accusations and says he has been under pressure to withdraw from the race
\nto become mayor of one of Bucharest’s sectors in the upcoming local elections
\non June 5th. <\/p>\n

Some 130
\nmilitary from the Republic of Moldova and the United States are taking part in
\nthe 2016 Agile Hunter joint military exercise. Hosted by the Training Centre of
\nthe Moldova Motorised Infantry Brigade in Balti, the exercise is aimed at
\nconsolidating the ability of the Moldovan army to deal efficiently with hybrid
\nwarfare threats and to cooperate with foreign partners. The drills will end on
\nMarch 19 and are part of a training programme that lasts four years. Moldovan
\ndefence minister Anatol Salaru has recently said cooperation with NATO member
\nstates, including Romania, will contribute to expanding the experience of the
\nMoldovan army, given possible threats of a conflict in the region. <\/p>\n

Romania’s highest ranked tennis player Simona Halep, currently fifth in the
\nworld, on Friday faces the American player Vania King, no. 202, in the second
\nround of the tennis tournament in Indian Wells, the US. Halep, who is the
\ndefending champion in Indian Wells, ended 2015 number 2 in the world but had a
\nslow start this year, with two wins and four defeats in the WTA circuit. Also
\non Friday, another Romanian player, Monica Niculescu, ranked 34th,

The Son of
\nSaul, the recipient of this year’s Oscar for best foreign language film opens
\nin Romanian cinemas on Friday. The Son of Saul is the debut film of director
\nLaszlo Nemes and features the Romanian actor of Hungarian origin Levente Molnar. The
\nfilm tells the story of a Jewish prisoner in Hungary forced to work for the
\nNazis at the Auschwitz gas chambers. While working in one of the furnaces, Saul
\ndiscovers the body of a boy he suspects to be his own son, and embarks on an
\nimpossible journey, wanting to save the body from cremation and to give the boy
\na proper funeral. Levente Molnar, an actor with the Hungarian State Theatre in Cluj
\nNapoca, plays Saul’s best friend in the film. <\/p>\n
