The announcement was made on Tuesday by Cristian Bu\u015foi, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy. He explained that the takeover of Azomure\u015f by Romgaz is meant to provide a certain level of security in terms of the supply of chemical fertilisers, but this will not automatically translate into very low prices. &#8220;This is a business and it\u2019s a free market. The expectation would be that prices would be more competitive and less burdensome for farmers, but they cannot be very different from the prices on the international market,&#8221; Cristian Bu\u015foi said, adding that while it will not necessarily lead to lower prices for these products, the takeover of Azomure\u015f by Romgaz would still have a significant impact. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Cristian Bu\u015foi: <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">There are advanced talks and a concrete offer was even made offer to the shareholders of Azomure\u015f. I hope things will have a happy resolution; while gas and fertiliser prices are aligned with European and international prices, at least in terms of security of supply things could be safer in this area if the Romanian state, through a company in which it holds majority control, is able to develop a strategic company such as Azomure\u015f\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Over the past year, the Azomure\u015f plant, owned by the Swiss group Ameropa, has held numerous talks with Romgaz regarding a possible acquisition of the industrial platform in T\u00e2rgu Mure\u015f. The company\u2019s activity is currently suspended. Employees\u2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">employment contracts are suspended and a c<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">ollective <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">redundancy<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> procedure is underway. According to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">the participants in the specialist <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">conference in Bucharest, the plant, which produces chemical fertili<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">ers by processing natural gas, could <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">supply<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> almost half of Romania&#8217;s fertili<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">er <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">demand<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Azomure\u0219 is the country&#8217;s largest producer of chemical fertili<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">ers and also the largest consumer of gas, using about 10% of national consumption when operating at full capacity. The plant was closed at the end of 2021 due to the high price of gas, which is a raw material in the fertili<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">er production process. It reopened in the summer of 2023, but h<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">as been operational sporadically ever <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">since. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Due to the frequent interruptions at <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Azomure\u0219, Romanian farmers <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">have had <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">to import fertili<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">ers <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">from outside the European Union, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">often <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">at higher costs<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Recent<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> tensions in the Middle East, which have <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">led to<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> significant increases in international gas prices, have also influenced the plant&#8217;s production costs. Last month, Romanian Parliament <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">decided to begin a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\"> legislative procedure to declare fertili<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">s<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">er production &#8220;national critical infrastructure&#8221;, in order to protect the sector and ensure the country&#8217;s food security.
