GROWTH STRATEGY<\/strong> The economic strategy titled: A
\nCompetitive Romania: a Project for Sustainable Economic Growth was launched for public debate on
\nTuesday. According to the Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, the government
\nwill place at the disposal of civil society, the academic environment and
\npolitical parties the documents it has developed so far. The launch will be followed by a string of public consultations aimed at improving the
\ninitial document and reaching the sustainable economic growth goal. The launch
\nevent was attended by President Klaus Iohannis, who called on the Government to
\nmake sure the strategy targets not only the economic component, but also
\nRomania’s priorities in the current European climate. The president also said
\nthat Romania managed to successfully overcome transition and the economic
\ncrisis.<\/p>\n

COUNTRY PROJECT<\/strong> Romania’s President Klaus
\nIohannis has announced the setting up of a group to draft a new country project
\nfor Romania, 10 years after its EU accession. The decision was made following
\nconsultations in Bucharest on the situation created by Brexit. Iohannis has
\nstated that the working group will work with the Romanian Presidency, and the
\ncountry project will guide Romania’s European path in the medium and long run.
\nAlso, the strategy will establish Romania’s place in the EU, as well its role
\nand commitment level. <\/p>\n

NATO SUMMIT<\/strong> At the Warsaw
\nsummit, due late this week, NATO leaders will decide upon turning a Romanian
\nbrigade into a multi-national force, said the NATO Secretary General Jens
\nStoltenberg during a press conference. The brigade, in which other member
\ncountries will take part too, will be
\nunder the command of the Multinational Division South-East based in Romania.
\nOther multi-national battalions will also be deployed in the three Baltic
\ncountries and Poland. This is the biggest collective defense strategy since the
\nend of the Cold War, Stoltenberg also said. Strengthening the Eastern flank of
\nthe Alliance, starting 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula, will be
\nendorsed at the 8-9 July Summit.<\/p>\n

MIGRATION<\/strong> The British Labour MP Keith
\nVaz has conveyed a message to Romanians saying they are still welcome to Great
\nBritain, even if the Kingdom leaves the EU. The British official has stated
\nthat the result of the referendum brought to light the gaps existing in British
\nsociety. Also, he believes that the issue of migration was used abusively and
\nin an exaggerated manner in speeches and it is not as big a threat as some
\nwould like to make it appear. Keith Vaz has stated that Romanians bring a
\nsignificant contribution to Great Britain and believes that the campaign
\nRomanians adopt Remainians is a fabulous way of showing the world that the
\nBritish are not willing to leave their European neighbors, despite the result
\nof the June 23rd referendum.<\/p>\n

REFERENDUM<\/strong> On October 2nd,
\nHungary will organize a referendum on the European refugee allocation plan,
\nopposed by the Hungarian PM Victor Orban. The Hungarian citizens will be
\ninvited to give an answer to the question: Would you like the EU to impose a
\nmandatory allocation quota for non-Hungarian citizens in Hungary, without the
\napproval of the Hungarian Parliament?. PM Orban, known for his anti-migration
\nstand, had announced a few months ago
\nthat he would hold a referendum against the plan to relocate some 160,000
\nthousand asylum-seekers from Greece and Italy. Budapest believes that these
\nmandatory quotas, decided upon in September last year, violate the country’s
\nsovereignty.<\/p>\n

TORY ELECTION<\/strong> The British Conservative MPs
\nwill cast their vote today in the first ballot for the election of the leader
\nof the party. There are five candidates in the race for the office previously
\nheld by David Cameron, who announced his resignation after the referendum on
\nBritain’s membership of the EU. One of the candidates will be eliminated today,
\nand others might decide to give up the race. According to the BBC, the Home
\nSecretary Theresa May has the best chances of succeeding. <\/p>\n

NATO EXERCISE<\/strong> The town of Targu-Mures, in
\ncentral Romania, is these days playing host to a NATO exercise, enjoying the
\nparticipation of 17 teams from countries such as Austria, Belgium, the Czech
\nRepublic, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, Serbia, Sweden, the US, Switzerland and
\nTurkey. The exercise was organized by the Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response
\nCoordination Centre and Romania, and is
\na computer simulation of an large-scale disaster situation, resulting in
\nmultiple victims and the evacuation of thousands of people.<\/p>\n

TENNIS<\/strong> Romanian tennis player Simona
\nHalep, ranking 5th in the WTA classification, is today fighting for
\nqualification to the semifinals of the Wimbledon tournament. She will play
\nagainst Angelique Kerber, number 4 in the WTA rankings. So far, the two have
\nplayed against each other four times, and the Romanian has won twice. On
\nMonday, Halep qualified for the quarters, after defeating the American Madison
\nKeys 6-7, 6-4, 6-3. Aged 24, Halep is the youngest player still in the
\ncompetition. The Wimbledon tournament has over 33.5 million Euros in prize
\nmoney.<\/p>\n
