Three Seas Initiative summit.<\/strong> On Thursday, Romania’s
\npresident Klaus Iohannis is attending a summit of the Three Seas Initiative,
\nnamely the Baltic Sea, the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea, hosted by Warsaw.
\nThe heads of state and representatives from 11 other Central and Eastern
\nEuropean countries, namely Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic,
\nEstonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary, are taking
\npart. The US president Donald Trump will also attend the summit as a special
\nguest. The purpose of the Initiative is to provide political support for the
\ncooperation and interconnection between the economies of the countries in the
\ngeographical area bordered by the three seas in fields such as energy, transport,
\ntelecommunications and environmental protection. <\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

Public
\nbroadcasting law. <\/strong>The Constitutional Court of Romania says it will discuss, on
\nthe 12th of July, a complaint by the main opposition party, the
\nNational Liberal Party, in respect of an amendment to the law regulating the
\nactivity of the public radio and television services. The National Liberal
\nParty says the law irremediably compromises the statutes, organisation and
\nactivity of these two autonomous public services of national interest. The
\nLiberals also say the law does not clarify the legal status of the two services
\ngiven the change in the way they are funded following the elimination of a
\nnumber of duties at the beginning of the year. They moreover argue that the new
\nlaw eliminates the state’s constitutional obligation to consolidate ties with
\nthe Romanians living abroad from an identity, ethnic, cultural, linguistic and
\nreligious point of view following the repeal of an article providing funding
\nfor the production and broadcast of programmes for the Diaspora. This, in the
\nLiberals’ opinion, will lead to a blocking of the activity of Radio Romania
\nInternational and TVR International. The law in question was adopted on the 20th
\nof June by the Senate, the decision-making body in this case. <\/p>\n

G20.<\/strong> The G20 summit taking place on Friday and Saturday in
\nHamburg may turn out to be one of the most conflicting since the creation of
\nthis forum in 2008, with bilateral tensions being fed by the international
\ndevelopments and essential disagreements with the US president Donald Trump,
\nthe France Presse news agency notes. According to the agency, the talks between
\nTrump and the Chinese president Xi Jinping are set to be difficult following
\nthe launch of North Korea’s first intercontinental missile on Tuesday, seen as
\na provocation to America on its national day. Hamburg will also host the first
\nmeeting between Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, with
\nthe latter expected to propose the normalisation of relations between the two
\ncountries. France Presse also notes that relations between Germany and Turkey
\nhave continued to deteriorate after a failed coup against president Recep
\nTayyip Erdogan in July last year. Turkey became even more vexed with Germany
\nwhen the latter rejected a request from Ankara that Erdogan be allowed to
\naddress members of the ethnic Turkish community living in Germany on the
\nsidelines of the G20 summit. <\/p>\n

North Korea. <\/strong>An emergency meeting of the UN
\nSecurity Council requested by the US following North Korea’s successfully
\ntesting its first intercontinental ballistic missile will take place today. The
\ntest sparked a strong reaction from US president Donald Trump, who called on
\nBeijing, Pyong Yang’s main ally, to act firmly to end such moves. Russia and
\nChina, two permanent members of the UN Security Council, have described the
\ntest as unacceptable. They urged North Korea to reinstate a moratorium on
\nnuclear tests and ballistic missile testing, while also requesting the US to
\nput an end to its military exercises in the area to defuse the situation in the
\nKorean Peninsula.<\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

Wimbledon.<\/strong> Three
\nRomanian tennis players, namely world no. 2 Simona Halep, the 64th-ranked
\nIrina Begu and the 115th-ranked Ana Bogdan, are today in action in
\nthe second round at Wimbledon. Halep faces the Brazilian player Beatriz Haddad Maia, Begu faces Croatia’s
\nAna Konjuh, while Bogdan meets France’s Caroline Garcia. Also in the second
\nround, another Romanian player, Sorana Cirstea, faces the American player Bethanie
\nMattek-Sands on Thursday. The doubles matches also begin today, with Begu,
\nCirstea, Monica Niculescu and Raluca Olaru playing in the women’s doubles and
\nHoria Tecau, Marius Copil and Florin Mergea playing in the men’s doubles. <\/p>\n
