\ntaking office. He will be presenting the state of the economy at the request of
\nthe main opposition party, the National Liberal Party. The priorities of the
\nruling coalition in the coming period include drafting the bill on a referendum
\nto redefine the concept of family in the Constitution, justice, pensions, the
\ncreation of a Romanian House of Commerce and a state budget bill expected to
\nreach Parliament next month. The list containing national objectives of
\nstrategic importance is also to be finalised, so that a series of major
\ninvestments could be funded and quickly implemented. According to prime
\nminister Mihai Tudose, this includes the Bucharest Airports company, Tarom and
\nthe motorway linking the capital Bucharest to the central city of Brasov. <\/p>\n

\nsecretary James Mattis has warned North Korea that any threat against the US
\nand its allies will be met with massive military response. He made these
\nstatements after informing president Donald Trump of the military options for
\nthe US following North Korea’s most recent nuclear test. The regime in North
\nKorea said this test, its 6th and largest so far, was for a hydrogen
\nbomb. This type of bomb can be mounted on the new type of intercontinental
\nballistic missile available to North Korea. The test has been harshly
\ncriticised by the international community, in particular the European Union and
\nthe US. The foreign ministry in Bucharest has expressed deep concern for the
\nprovocative actions of the authorities in Pyong Yang, which gravely violate the
\nUN Security Council resolutions and have escalated tension in the Korean
\nPeninsula to an unprecedented level. <\/p>\n

\ngovernment building on Sunday evening to protest against the latest measures
\nannounced by the government. Protesters are opposed to a bill to amend the
\njustice legislation and to attempts to withdraw the application of the Rosia
\nMontana site to be added on the UNESCO World Heritage list. An international
\ncourt of arbitration will this month begin the case filed by the Canadian
\ncompany Gabriel Resources requesting compensation of 4.4 billion dollars from
\nthe Romanian state for not being able to begin gold mining in Rosia Montana
\nbecause of the UNESCO application. Similar protests were held in Cluj, in the
\nnorth-west, and in Brasov, in the centre. <\/p>\n

\nRomania’s foreign minister Teodor Melescanu, who will be attending the
\nStrategic Forum in Bled, Slovenia, held on the 4th and 5th
\nof September, will also take part in an informal meeting of foreign ministers
\nfrom the South-East European Cooperation Process. The Strategic Forum in Bled
\nwill bring together over 1,000 participants from 70 countries, including
\npolitical leaders, business people and representatives of international
\norganisations, the academic community and NGOs. Talks will focus on the future
\nof Europe and security, given the growing threats to security in Europe and the
\nworld posed by terrorist attacks, the migration crisis and Brexit. <\/p>\n

\ndoubles partner CoCo Vandeweghe have reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals at
\nthe US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. They defeated the
\nSerbian-Taiwanese pair Nenad Zimonjic and Yung-Jan Chan. Tecau and Vandeweghe
\nwill next face the Hungarian-Brazilian pair Timea Babos and Bruno Soares, who
\nhave defeated the Romanian-Croatian pair Raluca Olaru and Nikola Mektic. Last
\nyear, Tecau was in the quarterfinals at the US Open also in the men’s doubles,
\ntogether with the Dutch player Jean-Julien Rojer. In the women’s doubles, Romania’s
\nMonica Niculescu and Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh have reached the quarterfinals,
\nwhere they will face the Indian-Chinese pair Sania Mirza and Shuai Peng.<\/p>\n

\nRomania play Montenegro today in a Group E match as part of their qualifying
\nrun for the World Cup to be held in Russia next year. On Friday, Romania won in
\nBucharest against Armenia. Currently ranked 4th in their group,
\nRomania only have a theoretical chance to qualify. Cristoph Daum, the team’s
\nmanager and the first foreign national to coach the Romanian national side, has
\nrecently come under more and more criticism from the media and the public over
\nthe team’s poor performance. <\/p>\n
