PROTESTS <\/strong>– Tens of thousands of people gathered on Saturday
\nafternoon, for the second running day, in Victory Square in Bucharest, for an
\nanti-government protest. No incidents were reported. Meanwhile, Romanian
\nmilitary prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation concerning the
\nintervention of the riot police during Friday night’s rally. President Klaus
\nIohannis accused the Government of being irrational and acting against the
\ninterests of their own citizens. He condemned the violence occurring on the
\nprevious night in Victory Square, and asked the Interior Minister, Carmen Dan,
\nto take responsibility for how the situation was handled. In response, the
\nInterior Minister said that what happened was serious and that nobody could
\naccuse the gendarme service for having enforced the law. Social-Democrat Prime
\nMinister Viorica D\u0103ncil\u0103 requested an immediate and comprehensive report from
\nthe Romanian Intelligence Service regarding the entities that planned and
\ninstigated the violence on Friday night, and regarding the actions of the
\npublic institutions in charge with providing data and intelligence on possible
\nintentions to highjack the protests. Some 100,000 people gathered on Friday in
\nfront of the Government headquarters in Bucharest, demanding the resignation of
\nthe cabinet and early elections. There were violent clashes between the
\nprotesters and the gendarmes, and riot police used tear gas and water cannons
\nto disperse the crowds. The gendarmes moved in after some of their colleagues
\nwere attacked. Over 450 people, including 35 gendarmes, received medical
\ntreatment further to the clashes, and 70 people were hospitalized, of whom 11
\ngendarmes, including a woman who was beaten and had her gun stolen. The police
\nhave arrested 2 people in connection with Friday night’s acts of violence and
\nhave opened 8 criminal cases. <\/p>\n

MEASLES <\/strong>– 70 new cases of measles were reported over August 2-9 in
\nBucharest and 15 counties across the country. According to the National Center
\nfor Monitoring and Control of Transmissible Disease, 2 years since the epidemic
\nbroke out in Romania, the number of people who got sick now stands at 15,000,
\nof whom 59 died. Measles can be prevented via vaccination. A quarter of the
\npeople suffering from measles need hospital care, and 1 in 1000 people dies in
\nRomania to measles, doctors have warned. <\/p>\n

ANONIMUL <\/strong>– The Iceland-Denmark coproduction Under the Tree,
\ndirected by Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurdsson, won the 2018 Anonimul Trophy at the 15th
\nedition of the Anonimul International Independent Film Festival, held in
\nSfantul Gheorghe, the Danube Delta. The public also picked the other winners.
\nKaveh Mazaheri’s Retouch won the award for best foreign short, while Emanuel
\nParvu’s Everything is far away got the award for best Romanian short. The
\nOvidiu Bose Pastina award bestowed by the Anonimul Foundation went to Mother,
\ndirected by Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen.<\/span><\/p>\n

NASA <\/strong>– On Sunday NASA successfully launched the Parker solar probe
\ninto space, which will try to ascertain whether the sun’s corona is hotter than
\nits surface. The Parker probe will travel into the sun’s atmosphere, closer to
\nany aircraft before. The spacecraft is fitted to withstand extreme temperatures
\nand radiation. This will be the first aircraft to fly into the sun’s atmosphere
\nand will transmit important data back to earth on the origin and evolution of
\nsolar wind. The probe will complete 24 orbits of the sun, travelling at
\napproximately 700,000 km\/h. <\/p>\n

GYMNASTICS <\/strong>– Andrei Muntean is the only Romanian who qualified to
\nthe individual finals at the European Gymnastics Championships in Glasgow.
\nMuntean will compete in Sunday’s still rings final. Aged 25, Muntean won the
\nOlympic youth title for this event in 2010 in Singapore. <\/p>\n

TENNIS <\/strong>– Romanian tennis player Simona Halep is today playing
\nSloane Stephens of the US, WTA no. 3, in the finals of the Rogers Cup in
\nMontreal, with total prize money of 2,8 million dollars. On Saturday Halep
\nousted Ashleigh Barty of Australia, 16th WTA, in the semi-finals. In
\nthe other semi-final, Sloane Stephens defeated Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, last
\nyear’s winner. Sunday’s game is actually a rematch of the Roland Garos final
\nearlier this year, won by Halep. This is Simona’s third final at Montreal. She
\nwon the 2016 edition. <\/p>\n
