NATIONAL DEFENSE COUNCIL – The Romanian coalition Government has called
\nfor an urgent meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense to endorse the
\nlatest budget adjustment. According to a communiqu\u00e9 issued by the Government,
\nformed by the Social Democratic Party and the Alliance of Liberals and
\nDemocrats, the request was submitted to president Klaus Iohannis. The
\nannouncement was made after on Tuesday the leader of the Social Democratic
\nParty, Liviu Dragnea, accused the head of state of trying to block the
\nadjustment by not summoning the Defense Council. Also on Tuesday, the
\npresidency informed that the secretariat of the Supreme Council of National
\nDefense was trying to get the individual approval of the members of the Council
\nregarding the proposed budgets for the institutions dealing with national
\nsecurity. According to the Government, the adjustment is needed in order to
\nprovide the necessary money for salaries, social welfare, the payment of
\nRomania’s contribution to the EU budget, local budgets and measures to combat
\nthe African swine fever. <\/p>\n

COOPERATION – Romania and Slovakia support the EU’s traditional
\npolicies within the future multi-annual financial framework, said in Bratislava on Tuesday
\nthe Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu at the annual meeting of the
\nSlovak diplomacy. He stated that Slovakia will support Romania during its
\npresidency of the Council of the EU, in the first half of 2019. Minister
\nMelescanu also stressed the importance of rendering the activity of European
\ninstitutions and decision-makers more effective, in order to first meet the
\nexpectations and priorities of the EU citizens. Teodor Melescanu has stated
\nthat his visit coincided with the celebration of 50 years since the reprisal of
\nthe Prague Spring and has recalled that Romania was the only country in the
\ncommunist block that did not take part in the invasion of Czechoslovakia
\ndecided by the Soviet Union. <\/p>\n

AFGHANISTAN – 23 Romanian gendarmes have left on a 6-month mission in
\nAfghanistan, to train, advise and assist the Afghan institutions and security
\nforces. The head of the contingent, colonel Dragos Buzoianu, with a vast
\nexpertise in international missions, was also appointed adviser to the Chief of
\nStaff of the Afghan National Police. So far, the Romanian Gendarmerie has
\ndeployed 8 contingents in Afghanistan. Also, Romanian gendarmes are
\nparticipating in 9 missions under the aegis of the EU, the UN and the OSCE. <\/p>\n

PRINCE CHARLES – Prince Charles of Great Britain supports financially the
\nrestoration of a medieval church in a village in Hunedoara, western Romania.
\nThe church is a historical monument built in the 14th century and
\nrequires repair works, estimated to cost approximately 6,500 Euro. Works are
\ndue to start in September, under the program called ‘Ambulance for Monuments’,
\nwhich Prince Charles supports constantly. Since 2016, 15 monuments in the west
\nand centre of Romania have been refurbished under this program. We recall that
\nPrince Charles has several properties in Romania, which he visits on a regular
\nbasis. <\/p>\n

PROETNICA FEST – The town of Sighisoara, in
\ncentral Romania, is hosting the 16th Intercultural Festival
\nProEtnica. The event organized as part of the European Year of Cultural
\nHeritage is attended by some 600 representatives of national minorities. Until
\nSunday, some 50 groups and ensembles representative for the 20 national
\nminorities living in Romania will be performing on the festival’s stages, in
\nthe only inhabited medieval fortress in south-eastern Europe. The festival also
\nincludes a science section, film screenings and art exhibitions, as well as stands
\nof products made by craftspeople. <\/p>\n

SWINE FEVER – Some 5000 wild boars in the areas where outbreaks of
\nAfrican swine fever have been confirmed are to be hunted down. The decision was
\nmade after the sanitary-veterinary authorities confirmed new outbreaks, as the
\nvirus was further spread by wild boars. Currently there are more than 600
\noutbreaks in more than 100 towns and villages in 9 counties across Romania.
\nThousands of pigs have been culled, both in private households and farms.
\nSpecialists say there is no danger for food safety. <\/p>\n

SIMONA HALEP – According to Forbes Magazine, with 7.7 million dollars,
\nthe Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, no. 1 in the WTA standings, ranks 8th
\namong the players with the highest incomes this year. She has won the Grand
\nSlam in France, at the Roland Garros and also another two WTA tournaments.
\nBesides the prizes awarded at these competitions, Simona has received an
\nimportant amount of money from sponsorships. The classification is topped by
\nthe US tennis player Serena Williams, with 18.1 million dollars. <\/p>\n
