VISIT Romanian president Klaus Iohannis is continuing his formal visit to
\nItaly. The Romanian official held talks with his Italian counterpart Sergio
\nMattarella on issues related to the bilateral consolidated strategic
\npartnership as well as cooperation at European and international levels. Iohannis
\nhas underlined the excellent relations between Romania and Italy, relations
\nbased on very old historical and cultural ties, as well as on social, economic
\nand human connections at present. Iohannis thanked Italy for the way in which
\nthe Romanians are being treated and integrated in that country. We recall that 1.2
\nmillion Romanians are currently living in Italy, forming the largest Romanian
\ncommunity abroad. On Sunday the Romanian president joined members of the
\nRomanian community in Italy for a symbolic moment, the projection of the
\nRomanian flag colours on the column of Emperor Trajan, who in 106 a.d.
\nconquered the ancient kingdom of Dacia, located on the territory of the
\npresent-day Romania. The Romanian official also met representatives of the orthodox,

TENNIS Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has reached her 50th
\nweek on the first position in the world standings, a WTA ranking published on
\nMonday shows. The Romanian occupies the 11th position in an all-time
\nranking and next week she will equal the performance obtained by Victoria
\nAzarenka of Belarus on the 10th position with 51 weeks. In this
\nweek’s ranking Halep’s advance against the second position occupied by Caroline
\nWozniacki rose to 960 points while Angelique Kerber of Germany on the third

EMERGENCY DECREE The Romanian Government on Monday passed an emergency decree for amending
\nsome justice laws, Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader announced. He explained
\nthat the decree was needed to correlate the three justice laws modified this
\nyear, and also to include some recommendations of the Venice Commission and
\nrequests of the Higher Council of Magistracy. Among the modifications are the
\nincrease, from 8 to 15 years, of the minimum number of years of work within the
\nlegal system in order to be eligible for leading positions within the
\nProsecutor’s Office with the High Court of Cassation and Justice, the
\nAnti-Corruption Directorate and the Directorate for Investigating Organized
\nCrime and Terrorism. In reaction to the emergency decree passed today by the
\nGovernment, Romania’s Prosecutor General, Augustin Lazar, says that amendments to
\nthe justice laws have been done hastily and are affecting investigations in the
\nbig criminal cases.<\/p>\n

FINANCIAL SUPPORT Romania’s
\nAgriculture Minister, Petre Daea on Monday sent to Brussels, the documents that
\nRomania needs in order to apply for financial support from the European
\nCommission to combat the effects of the African swine fever. Romania is
\nexpected to receive 40 million Euros, an amount which is to be invested in
\nlaboratories and the proper medical equipment to detect the disease and rebuild
\nits livestock. <\/p>\n
