DIPLOMACY – Combating anti-Semitism is one of Romania’s priorities at
\nthe helm of the Council of the EU, said the Romanian Minister – Delegate for
\nEuropean Affair George Ciamba, during a meeting with the Israeli ambassador to
\nBucharest David Saranga. According to a communiqu\u00e9 issued by the Foreign
\nMinistry, the two officials discussed the excellent stage of Romanian – Israeli
\nbilateral relations, which are based on a natural partnership, consolidated
\nalong 70 years of uninterrupted diplomatic ties. Also, minister Ciamba highlighted
\nthe significant efforts made by Romania in the past years in terms of assuming
\nits past and condemning the denial of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism. <\/p>\n

MOTION – A simple motion on justice, initiated
\nby the opposition National Liberal Party and the Save Romania Union, is to be
\nread and debated today in the Chamber of Deputies. The final vote will be held
\ntomorrow. The two parties call for the resignation of Justice Minister Tudorel
\nToader. Obedience, lying, lack of responsibility and bad faith have kneeled the
\njustice system in Romania, the signatories to the motion say, who also
\nchallenge some measures concerning the contest for admission to the National
\nInstitute of Magistracy and the initial professional training of judges and
\nprosecutors. Also, they accuse minister Toader of maintaining penitentiaries
\novercrowded, which will in turn lead to the early release of many convicts and
\nwill endanger citizens’ lives, integrity, health and assets. <\/p>\n

EXERCISE – The multinational exercise ‘Poseidon 19’, organized by the
\nRomanian Naval Forces, is unfolding in the Romanian and international waters in
\nthe west of the Black Sea until the 8th of March. More than 1.100
\nsoldiers, ten Romanian military vessels and four foreign vessels from Bulgaria,
\nGermany, Spain and Turkey, as well as two fast dive boats are taking part in
\nthe exercise. Air drills are carried out by one Puma Naval helicopter, two
\nMiG21 LanceR fighters and two F-16 planes of the Romanian Air Forces. The main
\ngoals of the exercise are to strengthen interoperability between the participating
\nships and crews and certifying the capabilities of the Romanian Navel Forces
\nplaced at the disposal of NATO for the coming period. <\/p>\n

KIDNAPPING – The Romanian Foreign
\nMinister Teodor Melescanu has stated
\nthat it is not known whether the kidnapping of three Romanian sailors in
\nthe territorial waters of Togo was an act of kidnapping or of terrorism. He has
\nstated that a crisis cell was activated within the ministry and contact has
\nbeen established with the authorities in Togo and Nigeria through the Romanian
\nEmbassy in Abuja. The three sailors were on board of a Maltese ship, with a
\ncrew made up almost exclusively of Romanians. The ship was attacked by a pirate
\nboat. According to the drill in such situations, the crew took refuge in the
\ncommand room and sent a message, as a result of which most of them were rescued.
\nThree of them, however, were not able to reach the area where the other had
\nbarricaded themselves and were kidnapped. <\/p>\n

TRAFICKING – Two Dutch citizens were caught in Maramures, northern
\nRomania, with 84 kg of heroin hidden in their car. They were detained by
\nprosecutors of the Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism
\nand are to be brought to court today. Prosecutors will propose provisional
\ndetention, pending trial. The two, one woman and a man, aged 29 and 44
\nrespectively, were coming from Ukraine, in a car registered in Germany. The
\nborder police found a special place in the car, where 167 parcels of heroin had
\nbeen hidden. <\/p>\n

VOLLEYBALL – The Romanian women’s volleyball teams CSM
\nAlba Blaj and Stiinta Bacau are today playing the return leg of the CEV cup’s semi-finals.
\nA week ago, in the first leg, in Bacau, Alba Blaj won 3-nil and holds most
\nchances of qualifying for the final. Last year, Alba played the final of the
\nChampions League, which it lost in Bucharest against the Turkish squad
\nVakifBank Istanbul. In the other semi-final
\nof the CEV Cup, Swietelsky Bekescsaba of Hungary will play against Yamamay e-work Busto Arsizio of Italy. <\/p>\n
