PARLIAMENT On the last day before the Romanian Parliament\u2019s summer recess, negotiations for a government with full powers are stuck. President Nicu\u015for Dan has two PM options on the table and must choose one of them, parliamentary parties argue: a minority government formed by the Social Democratic Party or one comprising the National Liberal Party, the Save Romania Union and the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania. The Liberals say they will not give a blank check to a government led by the Social-Democrat leader Sorin Grindeanu, and argue that they have set clear conditions from the beginning that must be stipulated in an agreement based on which they could support such a cabinet, including targets such as the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, the OECD accession and carrying on reforms. On the other hand, the Social Democrats announced they will not vote under any circumstances for a government headed by the Liberal MEP Siegfried Mure\u015fan. Only towards the end of July are there chances for an agreement, says the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania, which talks about a possible new majority together with the Social Democrats and the Liberals. The parties in the former ruling coalition also say they are not afraid of early elections, but this option is not a solution at this time. The nationalist AUR party (in opposition) believes, however, that snap elections would solve the current crisis. In this deadlock, president Nicu\u015for Dan has made it clear that he invites political leaders for consultations only after they have signed an agreement for stable parliamentary support.<\/p>\n

DRONE A team of defence ministry experts this morning detonated the explosive payload of a drone found in Tulcea County (east). According to the defence ministry, the fragments were reported by a local on Monday. According to initial assessments, they were remains from a drone used by the Russian Federation in attacks on Ukrainian ports in April. The authorities said the operation was safely completed, and the case was taken over by the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Constan\u0163a Court of Appeals. According to the ministry, since the beginning of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine, \u201c29 unauthorised entries by Russian drones into national airspace have been reported, and drones or drone fragments have been identified on Romanian territory in approximately 50 situations.\u201d The most recent are the Russian drone in Gala\u0163i at the end of May, which exploded on a block of flats and wounded 2 people, and the Ukrainian drone in Constan\u0163a, which self-detonated early this month after being jammed by Russian electronic warfare systems.<\/p>\n

HEAT WAVE Another hot day in Romania today, as a code red alert valid for most of the country will be active until tomorrow morning. Temperatures are expected to range between 35 and 41 degrees in more than three quarters of the territory, except in six counties in the southeast and south, where a code orange alert is in place. Concurrently, a large part of the country is facing weather instability, with a code yellow alert in force from noon until tonight, and heavy rainfalls and wind expected in the northwest and centre. One person died and over 40 people needed emergency medical assistance. On Wednesday, the area of \u200b\u200binstability and rain will move to the southern half of the country and the mountains, while the heat wave will move to the northern half, with highs expected to reach between 32 and 37 degrees Celsius. Authorities have introduced road traffic restrictions, and the national passenger railway corporation announced temporary train speed limits.<\/p>\n

TENNIS In the first round of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, the third Grand Slam of the year, the Romanian player Jaqueline Cristian (no 37 WTA) was defeated by Iva Jovic (US, no 16 WTA). Jaqueline Cristian will also play in the doubles competition, alongside Irina Begu, and will meet seeds number four, Elise Mertens (Belgium) \/ Shuai Zhang (China) in the first round.
