The Unirii A8 Highway, linking Romania and the Republic of Moldova, enters a new stage, after the contract for the Iasi – Ungheni section has been signed. The contract provides for the construction of the last 15.5 kilometers of the A8 Highway, T\u00e2rgu Mure\u015f \u2013 Ia\u015fi – Ungheni, the first five kilometers of the highway to Chisinau, respectively, a road that Romania is building on the territory of the Republic of Moldova under a government agreement signed by the two states.<\/p>\n
According to a communiqu\u00e9 by the government in Bucharest, the project has a value of 700 million Euros, and its funding is ensured through the SAFE programme of the European Union for the consolidation of defence capabilities.<\/p>\n
The project\u2019s time of implementation is 46 months, of which 10 months have been allotted to planning and 36 to execution. ‘It is a very important moment for the transport connectivity on either bank of the Prut River. By signing the two bilateral documents we are giving the green light to the project linking Romania to the Republic of Moldova, funded through the SAFE programme\u201d \u2013 Romania\u2019s interim Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, said when the documents were being signed.<\/p>\n
In turn, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova, deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea has thanked the Romanian government for support and partnership. \u2018Romania and the Republic of Moldova are developing a relationship based on respect and national interest. Including through this investment, the governments of the two countries prove they have the capability of developing large-scale projects to the benefit of citizens\u2019, Bolea says.<\/p>\n
Also attending the signing ceremony, Romania\u2019s interim Transport Minister, Radu Miru\u0163\u0103, says the \u2018A8 Highway is a strategic project. When the project is finalized in 2030, people will be driving from Bucharest to Ungheni on a highway, something which couldn\u2019t have been envisaged a few years ago.\u2019 The two ministers have signed the agreement on aspects related to the construction, exploitation and maintenance of the transport infrastructure of strategic interest for both states, including the border bridge over the Prut, between the localities of Ungheni Romania \u2013 Ungheni, the Republic of Moldova. The investment funded through the SAFE instrument, is part of the strategic corridor T\u0103r\u0103\u015feni (UA) – Siret (RO) – Mo\u0163ca (RO) – Ungheni (RO) – Bere\u015fti (MD), and is considered a priority connectivity axis between the EU and its eastern partners. The A8 highway has four sections with a total length of 89 kilometers and is one of the most important connectivity projects between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the communiqu\u00e9 of the government in Bucharest also says.<\/p>\n
