The head of state said on Facebook that during the night from Monday to Tuesday, the LPG Gas Lisbon, flying the Liberian flag, was struck outside Romanian territorial waters, approximately 20 nautical miles off the Romanian coast. Shortly after the incident, two vessels from the Romanian Agency for the Safety of Human Life at Sea arrived at the scene and evacuated the entire crew, including the three injured crew members, and all were brought safely ashore, the president noted. In addition, a tugboat dispatched to the area is ensuring that the vessel does not drift and does not pose an additional danger to navigational safety. \u201cState institutions are on alert and will clarify the circumstances, causes, and responsibilities related to this serious incident, which is most likely part of the Russian Federation\u2019s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine (\u2026),\u201d wrote Nicu\u015for Dan. For its part, the Ministry of Defense announced that it has an IAR-330 Puma Naval helicopter and two military vessels of the Romanian Naval Forces on standby to support the agencies responsible for managing the incident in the Black Sea, where an oil tanker flying the Liberian flag caught fire. The vessel had departed from the port of Alexandria, Egypt, and was heading toward the Ukrainian port of Reni.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gas.<\/strong>\u00a0OMV Petrom and Romgaz have finalised the installation of an offshore production platform for Neptun Deep, Romania\u2019s biggest natural gas project. Work is on schedule for production to begin in 2027, which will help consolidate energy security for Romania and the whole region. Located in waters that are around 120 meters deep, the platform, called Neptun Alpha, is over 225 meters tall and weighs 16,500 tonnes, according to a press release. The platform is fully automated and can be operated remotely. Representatives from the two companies also reported the completion of six out of the ten development wells, as well as the installation of the 160-kilometer pipeline connecting the platform to the shore. The platform will ensure the natural gas processing \u00a0and its transfer to the transport infrastructure that will bring it to shore. Romgaz is the largest natural gas producer and main supplier in Romania, with the Romanian state as the majority shareholder, holding a 70% stake, while OMV Petrom is the largest integrated energy producer in Southeast Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill.<\/strong> Representatives of the parties from the former governing coalition discussed the new salary law on Tuesday in Bucharest with Radu Burnete, President Nicu\u0219or Dan\u2019s economic advisor. Acting Minister of Labor Drago\u0219 P\u00eeslaru assured them that incomes would not decrease and proposed a new draft of the bill. The parties will review it by next week, when another meeting will take place. The bill, as initially presented, sparked protests, as people were concerned that their incomes would decrease. Also on Tuesday, the Bucharest Court of Appeals granted a motion by the SANITAS Federation and ordered the suspension of the legislative process for the draft law on the salaries of personnel paid from public funds, as published on the Ministry of Labor\u2019s website. The decision effectively blocks the bill\u2019s legislative path, finds an apparent illegality due to the lack of genuine consultation with the unions, and requires the government to resume official negotiations. Previously, the PSD announced that it was preparing a substantial set of amendments following consultations with the unions. The Social Democrats say that they will not vote for a law that cuts the incomes of public sector employees. On the other hand, the Liberals warn that populist amendments jeopardize European funds. They also reject the proposal by PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu, who sent an invitation to all parties to establish a crisis committee in Parliament to address the pending laws related to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Sorin Grindeanu, who is also the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, has decided to convene the Standing Bureau and will request an extraordinary session beginning Monday, July 27.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eurostat. <\/strong>Romania and Slovakia had the best performance in the EU in terms of reducing their government deficits in the first quarter of the year. According to data published Tuesday by Eurostat, Romania\u2019s deficit fell from 7.5% of GDP in the fourth quarter of last year to 3.6% of GDP in the first quarter of 2026\u2014a decline of nearly 3.8 percentage points, the largest in the EU. In the European Union, the government deficit fell from 3.4% of GDP in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 3.1% of GDP in the first quarter of this year. Eurostat\u2019s provisional data show that the list of member states with the highest government deficits is led by Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and France. As for member states\u2019 public debt, the debt-to-GDP ratio in the EU rose from 81.8% at the end of the fourth quarter of 2025 to 82.9% in the first quarter of 2026, according to Eurostat. Seventeen member states recorded an increase in their debt-to-GDP ratio, with the largest increases occurring in Hungary, Lithuania, and Luxembourg. In Romania, the debt-to-GDP ratio rose by 0.8 percentage points from one quarter to the next, the smallest increase recorded among member states.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danube.<\/strong> Water levels on the Romanian section of the Danube dropped over the weekend to their lowest point since 1996, leading to irrigation restrictions for farmers and partially disrupting shipping and tourism along its banks, Reuters reports. The agency notes that waterways across Europe have been affected by prolonged heatwaves and drought this year. The authorities said the flow rate at the point where Europe\u2019s second-longest river enters Romania was 1,700 cubic meters per second on Sunday, compared to a July average of 4,700 cubic meters per second. Images show long stretches of exposed sand along the banks near the border with neighboring Bulgaria, with several ferry services suspended and grain barges unable to operate. Romania is one of the European Union\u2019s largest grain sellers and an active exporter. Authorities have restricted farmers\u2019 access to water for crop irrigation in southeastern Romania and have been monitoring water reservoirs to ensure minimum levels required to cool the two reactors at the state-owned nuclear power plant Nuclearelectrica, Reuters notes.
