{"id":104988,"date":"2021-03-26T13:55:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T11:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devrri.freshlemon.ro\/news-and-current-affairs\/newsflash\/march-26-2021-104988.html"},"modified":"2024-02-15T20:51:20","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T18:51:20","slug":"march-26-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rri.ro\/en\/news-and-current-affairs\/newsflash\/march-26-2021-id104988.html","title":{"rendered":"March 26, 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<p><strong class=cms-bold>Restrictions.<\/strong> Covid infections are rising in&#13;<br \/>\nRomania, where more than 6,500 new cases and 116 fatalities were recorded on&#13;<br \/>\nFriday, while ICU admissions rose to 1,364. 11 counties and Bucharest are in&#13;<br \/>\nthe red zone, with an infection rate of more than 3 cases per 1,000 residents.&#13;<br \/>\nOn Thursday evening, the government approved new measures to contain the&#13;<br \/>\npandemic. Movement outside the home is banned from 8 pm at the weekend and from&#13;<br \/>\n10 pm during weekdays and shops will be closing at 6 pm in places where the&#13;<br \/>\ninfection rate surpasses 4 cases per 1,000 residents. Where the infection rate&#13;<br \/>\npasses 7.5, the movement restrictions for the weekend will also apply during&#13;<br \/>\nweekdays. As an exception, movement will be permitted until 2 am on Passover&#13;<br \/>\nand Catholic and Orthodox Easter. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=cms-bold>EU.<\/strong> Romania&#8217;s president Klaus Iohannis, who is&#13;<br \/>\nattending a two-day online EU summit, reiterated a call for unity and the&#13;<br \/>\nconsolidation of the European Union. Solidarity is the only way to move forward&#13;<br \/>\nin these difficult times, he said. The Covid pandemic is the main topic on the&#13;<br \/>\nagenda of the European Council, with EU leaders stressing the need to step up&#13;<br \/>\nproduction, delivery and distribution of vaccines. They are also discussing the&#13;<br \/>\npreparations for the gradual relaxation of restrictions and the consolidation&#13;<br \/>\nof the Union&#8217;s global response to the pandemic. In the conclusions published&#13;<br \/>\nafter the first day of the summit and adopted on Thursday night, EU leaders&#13;<br \/>\ncalled on Turkey to abstain from further provocation or unilateral actions that&#13;<br \/>\nrun counter to international law and said they would analyse the progress made&#13;<br \/>\nin June. A summit on the European single currency was also held on the&#13;<br \/>\nsidelines of the European Council meeting focusing on the international role of&#13;<br \/>\nthe euro. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=cms-bold>Strike. <\/strong>The Bucharest underground service was&#13;<br \/>\ndown this morning because of a spontaneous strike of metro workers. Transport&#13;<br \/>\nminister C\u0103t\u0103lin Drul\u0103 said the protest was illegal and disruptive. In a&#13;<br \/>\nFacebook post, he said a handful of people are trying to retain their&#13;<br \/>\nprivileges and plum jobs and that what&#8217;s in fact at stake are the dubious&#13;<br \/>\nbusinesses involving the leasing of commercial space in metro stations. The&#13;<br \/>\nprotest came only one day after the administrator of these commercial spaces, a&#13;<br \/>\nfirm owned by a trade union, was notified that these spaces must be freed and&#13;<br \/>\nhanded over to the administrator of the underground transport network by 2nd&#13;<br \/>\nApril. The Bucharest Underground Company Metrorex says some of the commercial&#13;<br \/>\nactivities carried out in metro stations are blocking evacuation exits and may pose&#13;<br \/>\na danger to people&#8217;s safety in case of emergency. The representatives of the&#13;<br \/>\ntrade union that organised the strike replied that all shops inside metro&#13;<br \/>\nstations were set up in keeping with the law and with the approval of Metrorex,&#13;<br \/>\nand that 80% of them are owned by metro trade unions. Some 700,000 people use&#13;<br \/>\nthe Bucharest metro every day. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=cms-bold>Clock change. <\/strong>The European Parliament urges stepping&#13;<br \/>\nup efforts to respond to a call from EU citizens to give up plans to change&#13;<br \/>\nclocks in EU member states. In March 2019, MEPs voted to discontinue the&#13;<br \/>\npractice of changing clocks by one hour in spring and autumn from 2021.&#13;<br \/>\nAccording to the European Parliament, two years later, the EU Council is yet to&#13;<br \/>\npropose a common position. 84% of EU citizens are in favour of ending the clock&#13;<br \/>\nchanges, which many studies say have negative effects on human health, emphasised&#13;<br \/>\nthe rapporteur for the European Parliament Johan Danielsson shortly before EU&#13;<br \/>\ncountries are due to switch to summer time. For the new rules to become EU law,&#13;<br \/>\nthey must be adopted by both Parliament and the European ministers. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=cms-bold>Visit. <\/strong>Romanian foreign minister Bogdan Aurescu&#13;<br \/>\ntravels to Slovenia today for talks with president Borut Pahor, the speaker of&#13;<br \/>\nthe National Assembly Igor Zorcic and political consultations with minister&#13;<br \/>\nAnze Logar. A foreign ministry statement says the visit is a good opportunity to&#13;<br \/>\nreview concrete ways to expand bilateral cooperation on a political, economic&#13;<br \/>\nand sectoral level. Talks focus on the priorities of the European agenda with&#13;<br \/>\nemphasis on combating the effects of the Covid pandemic, enhancing the bloc&#8217;s&#13;<br \/>\nresilience, the upcoming debates as part of the Conference on the Future of&#13;<br \/>\nEurope, economic recovery, the enlargement policy and ways to revitalise the&#13;<br \/>\nEastern Partnership. The Eastern Partnership summit  will be held during Slovenia&#8217;s EU presidency,&#13;<br \/>\nwhich begins on 1st July. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=cms-bold>Football. <\/strong>Romania defeated North Macedonia on Thursday&#13;<br \/>\nevening in Bucharest in their first World Cup qualifying match. Romania will&#13;<br \/>\nnext be facing group favourites Germany, who defeated Iceland on Thursday,&#13;<br \/>\n3-nil. In another group match, Armenia defeated Liechtenstein 1-nil. Group&#13;<br \/>\nwinners are ensured qualification for the World Cup, while the second-placed&#13;<br \/>\nsides will go into play-offs. In other football news, Romania&#8217;s Under-21 side&#13;<br \/>\nwill be playing Hungary on Saturday as part of the European Under-21 Football&#13;<br \/>\nChampionship hosted by Hungary jointly with Slovenia. In their opening&#13;<br \/>\nchampionship match, Romania drew 1-all against The Netherlands. Germany are&#13;<br \/>\nalso in their group. <\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p><strong class=cms-bold>Tennis.<\/strong> World no.&#13;<br \/>\n3 Simona Halep of Romania defeated France&#8217;s Caroline Garcia to reach the third&#13;<br \/>\nround at the Miami Open. She will next be playing Latvia&#8217;s Anastasija&#13;<br \/>\nSevastova. Another Romanian player, world no. 66 Sorana Cirstea is facing&#13;<br \/>\nEstonia&#8217;s Anett Kontaveit today.
