Drone near the Neptun Deep offshore platform<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Romanian military scrambled F-16 fighter jets to neutralize a naval drone spotted a few hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas extraction project in the Black Sea, Acting Defense Minister Radu Miru\u021b\u0103 said on Thursday. “To protect the lives of the several hundred people working on the platform and to secure critical infrastructure, the decision was made to destroy the naval drone,” Miru\u021b\u0103 added. He did not specify the drone’s origin but noted that neighboring Ukraine\u2014currently invaded by Russian troops\u2014had confirmed it did not belong to its forces. President Nicu\u0219or Dan pointed to Russia as the party responsible. “I strongly condemn the escalation of such irresponsible incidents by the Russian Federation,” he wrote on Facebook. The Neptun Deep project is set to make Romania the largest gas producer in the European Union once it becomes operational in 2027. A NATO and EU member state, Romania shares a 614-kilometer land border with Ukraine and has faced numerous Russian drone incursions into its airspace and floating mines in the Black Sea\u2014along vital commercial and energy routes\u2014over the past four years.<\/p>\n

Public debt rises<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romania’s public debt has exceeded 60% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP); consequently, the government cannot approve measures that increase total personnel or social welfare spending, announced interim Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare. He also noted that Romania remains subject to the excessive deficit procedure and that the fiscal consolidation plan agreed upon with the European Commission entails clear limits on expenditure growth. The deficit for 2026 is projected at 6% of GDP, following 7.9% in 2025 and a record high of 9.3% in 2024<\/p>\n

Romanian Farmers and the Ukrainian Grain<\/strong><\/p>\n

The League of Agricultural Producers’ Associations (LAPAR) is calling on the authorities to rigorously track the route of Ukrainian grain transiting through Romania, amidst the potential reactivation of the so-called “solidarity lanes” for agricultural products from the neighboring country. LAPAR demands that entry documents be mandatorily cross-referenced with exit documents to verify that the entire quantity of grain declared in transit actually leaves Romanian territory. Proposals also include the use of pre-defined routes monitored by the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration and the Romanian Police, as well as the deployment of mobile scales at all border crossings. Regarding freight trains, farmers are calling for checks to ensure that loading and unloading hatches are properly sealed. A similar request was submitted last week to the authorities in Bucharest by the Alliance for Agriculture and Cooperation (AAC) in Romania; the alliance advocates for rigorous controls and full traceability of Ukrainian grain in transit, alongside concrete measures to safeguard the country’s economic interests.<\/p>\n

Turmoil within the USR<\/strong><\/p>\n

The USR Political Committee\u2014part of the governing coalition in Bucharest alongside the PNL and UDMR\u2014met on Wednesday evening to reaffirm its support for Dominic Fritz, the mayor of Timi\u0219oara (in the west), as the party’s leader. The meeting followed a Constitutional Court (CCR) ruling regarding the National Integrity Agency (ANI) Law; under this ruling, Fritz\u2014who is subject to a final court decision regarding a conflict of interest\u2014could lose his mayoral office. The mayor and his supporters have denounced what they termed a “brutal abuse of power” committed by CCR judges appointed by the PSD (which moved into opposition in May). However, media reports note that, in fact, over 120 individuals are affected by the so-called “Fritz amendment,” which mandates the loss of one’s mandate or office following final court rulings on violations of incompatibility and conflict-of-interest regulations. While often unpopular and challenged in the press or through public protests, CCR rulings are final and irreversible. This is not the first time the Court has caused political tremors of varying magnitudes. Two years ago, it blocked the presidential bid of current MEP Diana \u0218o\u0219oac\u0103\u2014a known Russophile with a reputation as a provocateur. Then, for reasons that remain unclear to the public to this day, he completely annulled the presidential elections, triggering the most obscure and embarrassing episode in the 35-year history of post-communist Romanian democracy.<\/p>\n

David Popovici, Europe’s Best Swimmer<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romanian athlete David Popovici\u2014who won gold medals this month in the 100m and 200m freestyle events at the European Swimming Championships in Paris\u2014has also received the award for Europe’s best swimmer of 2025, presented by the continental governing body. Popovici, who turns 22 in September, has had an exceptional 2025. Coached by Adrian R\u0103dulescu, the athlete won two gold medals at last year’s World Championships in Singapore\u2014also in the 100m and 200m freestyle\u2014and claimed three medals at the European Junior Championships in \u0160amor\u00edn: two gold and one bronze. David Popovici is also the first swimmer to achieve the 100m\u2013200m freestyle double at three consecutive editions of the European Championships: Rome 2022, Belgrade 2024, and Paris 2026.<\/p>\n
