Politics.
\n<\/strong>President Klaus Iohannis invited all parliamentary parties for talks on
\nMonday to nominate a prime minister. The Social
\nDemocratic Party and the National Liberal Party, the biggest parties in
\nParliament, as well as the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania
\nsaid they would see the president together after they agreed to form a
\ngovernment led by Nicolae Ciuc\u0103 from the Liberal Party. The
\npresident will also receive the Save Romania Union, formerly in the ruling
\ncoalition, and the Alliance for the Union of Romanians, as well as the group of
\nethnic minorities other than Hungarian. If he becomes prime minister, reserve
\narmy general Nicolae Ciuc\u0103 would be the first career military to lead a
\ngovernment in post-communist Romania. <\/p>\n

Covid-19.<\/strong>
\nRomania reported almost 2,700 new Covid cases on Saturday, as well as 214
\nrelated fatalities, including 43 recorded earlier. Almost 1,600 Covid patients
\nare in intensive care. Bucharest’s incidence rate in the last fortnight is 4.05
\ncases per 1,000 inhabitants, having peaked at 16.54 on 22nd October.
\nThe National Committee for Emergency Situations approved a proposal to allow
\nall schools to reopen for in-person teaching in places where the incidence rate
\nis below 3 per thousand, regardless of the vaccination rate among the school
\nstaff. The Committee also agreed to lift the ban on certain activities and
\nevents pending government’s final decision. These include sports events,
\nconcerts, outdoor performances and festivals, conferences and courses, and
\nwhich can only be attended by persons holding the Covid green pass and at only
\n30% of the capacity of those spaces. If the situation continues to improve, the
\nwinter holidays may be celebrated without many restrictions, said the head of
\nthe Department for Emergency Situations Raed Arafat. <\/p>\n

Moldova.<\/strong> The pro-western president of the Republic of Moldova Maia
\nSandu will be travelling to Romania on Tuesday at the invitation of her
\ncounterpart Klaus Iohannis. This is her first visit to Romania after the early
\nparliamentary elections last July, which were categorically won by her Action
\nand Solidarity Party and comes amid the 30th anniversary this year
\nof diplomatic relations between the two countries. According to a statement
\nfrom the Romanian president’s office, the visit will be a good opportunity to
\nreconfirm the special, privileged relationship and the Strategic Partnership
\nfor the European integration of the Republic of Moldova based on shared
\nlanguage, culture and history. The talks between Sandu is Iohannis are expected
\nto consolidate the excellent and substantial bilateral cooperation at
\npolitical, economic and sectoral level and boost progress with respect to joint
\nstrategic projects in the areas of energy, transport, healthcare, education and
\ninformation society. <\/p>\n

<\/strong><\/p>\n

Handball.<\/strong> Romanian
\nhandball champion CSM Bucharest defeated the Hungarian side FTC-Rail Cargo 27-21
\nin a Champions League Group A match on Saturday. This was their last match this
\nyear, with the competition to be resumed in 2022. The World Championship will
\nbe held in the meantime in Spain, between 1st and 20th
\nDecember. Romania are in Group C and will be facing Iran on 3rd
\nDecember, Kazakhstan on 5th and Norway on 7th. The three
\nbest-placed teams will qualify to the main groups. At the previous edition
