\npaper, Germany and France have rejected a blanket ban on Russian citizens
\nentering the European Union, as proposed by several member states, notes the
\ndpa news agency. While accepting that visa applications from Russian citizens
\nshould be carefully examined for potential security risks, the paper warns
\nagainst underestimating the transformative power of experiencing life in
\ndemocratic systems at first-hand. The French-German paper added that a blanket
\nban could lead to a rise in nationalist and anti-European sentiments in Russia.
\nRomania said it will back the suspension of EU’s visa facilitation agreement
\nwith Russia, which will be discussed by EU foreign ministers meeting in Prague
\nfrom today. The Romanian foreign minister Bogdan Aurescu backs the restriction
\nof the movement of Russian citizens within the bloc, including for tourism. The
\nCzech Republic, which is holding the Union’s rotating presidency, hopes the 27
\nEU member states will reach a consensus to implement this measure by October. <\/p>\n

\nGermany’s support for Romania’s accession to the EU’s passport-free Schengen
\narea and thanked chancellor Olaf Scholz for his support. In his address at the
\nEU summit in Prague, Scholz said Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria meet all
\ntechnical criteria for full membership and that the Schengen area must be
\nprotected and developed, which means closing the remaining gaps. During a visit
\nto Romania in June, the French president Emmanuel Macron also stated his
\nsupport for this idea. <\/p>\n

\npro-Russian president Igor Dodon is to remain under house arrest after his
\nappeal against this measure was rejected by the Court of Appeal. Dodon, who is
\nnow the honorary president of the Socialists’ Party he founded, was detained on
\n24th May and placed under house arrest two days later. He is
\nsuspected of acquiring illicit wealth, passive corruption, illegal party
\nfunding and treason. Dodon’s wife and mother are also under investigation, as
\nwell as his brother-in-law, who is in temporary custody. <\/p>\n

\nlaunched a strong counteroffensive against the invading Russian troops in the
\noccupied south, seeking to retake Kherson, a city of 280,000 inhabitants
\noccupied by the Russian troops in the early days of the invasion. The Ukrainian
\nmilitary are already speaking about the withdrawal of a unit of pro-Russian
\nseparatist fighters from the region. Russia says, however, that it rejected the
\nUkrainian attempts to advance into Kherson and Mykolaiv, with a Russian defence
\nministry statement saying the counteroffensive failed and the Ukrainians
