Japan-Romania. <\/strong>On
\nMonday, on the first day of his official visit to Japan, Romania’s president
\nKlaus Iohannis had talks with the president of the House of Councillors
\nHidehisa Otsuji and the speaker of the House of Representatives Hiroyuki Hosoda.
\nTalks focused on the Romania-Japan Strategic Partnership and the regional
\nsecurity situation. The Japanese officials underlined that the Strategic
\nPartnership creates new opportunities for cooperation in the economic sector,
\ntrade, research and innovation. With respect to the security situation, the
\nJapanese officials emphasised that Japan and Romania share the same vision and
\napproach and conveyed their appreciation of Romania’s sustained actions and
\nefforts to support Ukraine, both with the refugees and to facilitate the
\ntransit of cereals. On Tuesday, president Iohannis is to be received by emperor
\nNaruhito. He will later also meet prime minister Fumio Kishida, together signing
\na joint declaration on the establishment of the Romania-Japan Strategic
\nPartnership. On Wednesday, the Romanian president will meet local officials
\nfrom Kyoto. On Thursday and Friday, he will make a state visit to Singapore,
\nthe first at this level in the last 20 years, where he will have talks with
\npresident Halimah Yacob and prime minister Lee Hsien Loong.<\/p>\n

Danube Delta.<\/strong> Experts from Romania and Ukraine are
\nmeeting today to discuss a plan for conducting measurements of the Bystroye
\ncanal and Chilia branch in the Danube Delta, an activity due to begin on 15th
\nMarch and last ten days. European officials are also arriving in Bucharest
\ntoday to collect data from the Romanian and Ukrainian authorities. Bucharest
\nhas voiced concerns that the Ukrainian side may have deepened the navigable
\nwaterway in the Bystroye canal more than agreed, which would have a negative
\nimpact on the Danube Delta ecosystems. Bystroye is not part of the European
\ntransport network and deepening it would allow for the passing of high-tonnage
\ncommercial ships. Under international treaties, the Sulina canal is the only one
\nto be used for the transport of maritime goods in the Danube Delta. <\/p>\n

\n <\/p>\n

Motion.<\/strong> The Chamber of Deputies is today
\ndebating a simple no-confidence motion against labour minister Marius Bud\u0103i
\nfiled by the Save Romania Union and unaffiliated MPs from the Force of the
\nRight, with voting to be held on Tuesday. Minister Bud\u0103i is accused of not
\ndrafting the right bill to eliminate special pensions and of intentionally
\ndelaying getting rid of these privileges. The special pensions bill has been on
\nParliament’s table for debate for some time, with the finance ministry yet to
\npresent a report on the budget impact. Also today, finance minister Adrian C\u00e2ciu
\nis expected in Parliament to explain why the country’s budget deficit reached
\nrecord-high levels and financing costs are among the highest in the European
\nUnion. <\/p>\n

Ban.<\/strong> The
\nRomanian authorities are considering blocking TikTok app from the work phones
\nof public sector employees, after the European Commission and the European
\nParliament made a similar decision due to cyber security concerns. The minister
\nfor research, innovation and digitalisation Sebastian Burduja said recently
\nthat the TikTok ban is analysed by all institutions involved. The leaders of
\nthe ruling coalition, prime minister Nicolae Ciuc\u0103 and the speaker of the
\nChamber of Deputies Marcel Ciolacu, said Romania should have the same approach
\nas the European institutions. TikTok may also be banned in the US, with the
\nRepublicans already submitting a bill in Congress that would clear the way for
\nthe president to ban the app. (CM)<\/p>\n
