Our journey begins in the municipality of Arad, often nicknamed “Little Vienna” due to its heritage buildings erected in the Secession, Neoclassic, and Baroque styles. Positioned at the intersection of vital communication routes linking northern and southern Europe and the east and west of the continent, the city has fully capitalized on its strategic location. In the past, the border between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Turkish Pashalik ran right across the Mureș River, a circumstance that represented a major advantage for the area’s inhabitants. This legacy is complemented today by unique tourist landmarks, such as the Arad Fortress, an impressive star-shaped stronghold built in the Vauban style, and the renown left by the “Green Arrow,” the first electrified local railway on the territory of present-day Romania.

Our guide today, Dorin Frandeș, conductor at the Arad State Philharmonic and educator, offers details about the concept behind the city’s main iconic buildings.

“A less clear aspect, even for its inhabitants, is the entirely emblematic architectural conception of Arad. Buildings of major importance are organized in a unique way. The Cultural Palace, situated right on the Mureș riverbank, is separated by a park from the Palace of Justice, another impressive building erected at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Together with the administrative headquarters of the City Hall, these edifices form an architectural triangle. To the left of the Philharmonic lies the ‘School Road,’ a communication route concentrating Arad’s most important educational institutions. Not far from this concentration of major power buildings stands the theater known today as ‘Ioan Slavici.’ It was built around 1800 and, although it burned down twice, it was reborn each time from its own ashes. Nearby is also found the Old Theater, the first brick building in the region used as a theater, known in specialized terminology for having had a ‘rope ceiling.’”

A central point of this architectural triangle is the Philharmonic building, which continues to catch the eye and impress listeners. Conductor Dorin Frandeș explains the history and symbolism of this unique space.

“The building that houses the State Philharmonic today has a special history and functionality. It represented everything that was imagined back then as a culture house, which is why it still bears the name of the Cultural Palace. Architecturally, the building stands out through its pentagon shape—a pentagon dedicated to culture—with each facade designed and decorated in a different style: classicizing, Gothic, and eclectic, from the early 20th century. The interior decorations, featuring gold leaf and stained glass, reflect the Art Nouveau and Secession styles specific to the 1900s, being preserved in their original form. The concert hall, with an initial capacity of nearly 700 seats, is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, considered by specialists among the best in this part of Europe. On the vault of the palace’s main lobby, a unique fresco can be admired. Unlike ordinary religious paintings depicting the Pantocrator, this one illustrates the universe, planets, and the solar system. A unique detail is the presence of a comet, Halley’s Comet. This element represents a symbolic connection between Arad and America, as the comet was visible in the sky precisely in the year the construction was completed, 1912, a year that also marked the death of the famous writer Mark Twain”.

A short distance from the municipality of Arad lies the town of Lipova, an unmissable tourist destination. Here, historical influences are visible at every turn: from the Turkish Bazaar in the historic center, the only monument of this type remaining from the Ottoman pashalik period in Romania, to the imposing Șoimoș Fortress or the Maria Radna Papal Basilica, a major Catholic pilgrimage landmark for southeastern Europe. Museographer Corina Dubeștean brings to the forefront the importance of this space steeped in history.

“Through its rich historical past, Lipova pleads for the idea of affirmation through unity and continuity of the Romanian population in this area over the centuries. The locality was a veritable commercial and economic center, and starting with the 19th century, it also acquired a strong cultural dimension. The town stood out through the consistency with which it promoted Romanian cultural values and initiatives. Through the personalities, societies, and cultural associations that operated here, Lipova ranks among the most important Transylvanian settlements on the left bank of the Mureș. Against the backdrop of this rich tradition, the Lipova Town Museum was established in 1958”.

This cultural institution houses an impressive treasure, whose value has grown significantly over the decades, especially thanks to donations. Museographer Corina Dubeștean details the composition of this exhibition.

“The collection brings together works of fine and decorative art, both Romanian and universal. The permanent exhibition features works by the most important Romanian painters: Nicolae Grigorescu, Ioan Andreescu, Ștefan Luchian, Nicolae Tonitza, Theodor Pallady, Theodor Aman, Dumitru Ghiață, Gheorghe Petrașcu, and Camil Ressu. Also present are creations by appreciated artists from younger generations, such as Ion Țuculescu, Samuel Mützner, and many others. In the halls of the Lipova museum, works by notorious painters and graphic artists from European schools can also be admired: Italian — Carlo Maratti, Flemish-Dutch — Ludolf Bakhuizen, Hungarian, English, and French”.

Thus, through its exceptional architectural heritage and European-resonant art collections, the Arad-Lipova axis fully demonstrates its value, representing a benchmark on Romania’s cultural and tourist map.
