Representatives of the Romanian Railways (C\u0103ile Ferate Rom\u00e2ne) have stated that this change will not affect train schedules; since neighboring countries are also making the switch on the same day, international trains will continue to arrive at border stations according to the current timetable. The practice of changing the clock was introduced in Europe during the last century as a way to save electricity. In 2019, the European Parliament voted to abolish this practice, but no final decision has been reached to date. In Romania, daylight saving time was first adopted in 1932.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vaccination<\/strong> \u2013 The Romanian government has announced the launch of a vaccination program against peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and sheep and goat pox, diseases that have brought exports to a standstill. The first 300,000 doses, part of a donation of over one million doses from the European Union, have already arrived in the country. The decision has been welcomed by sheep and goat farmers, who are now awaiting the actual start of the nationwide vaccination campaign. Industry representatives have stated that a very large number of doses will be required and that the authorities should provide full information regarding any potential impact the vaccine might have on the quality of the products. Exports of live animals and derived products have been blocked by the European Commission until December 31 of this year; these restrictions are disrupting trade and causing financial losses for sheep and goat farmers. Last month, during a rally held near the Government headquarters, the farmers strongly demanded the resumption of these exports.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Army Day<\/strong> &#8211; Military and religious ceremonies will be held on Sunday, October 25, the Romanian Armed Forces Day, in major garrisons across the country, at bases where Romanian troops are stationed, in theaters of operations, as well as in countries where Romania has accredited defense attach\u00e9s and in the capitals of states where it maintains permanent diplomatic missions. Similar ceremonies will also take place at cemeteries and monuments dedicated to Romanian soldiers in Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the Republic of Moldova, and Hungary. On October 25, 1944, during the Second World War, the Romanian Army completed the liberation of northern Transylvania, which had until then been under Hungarian occupation. The war effort during these campaigns involved the deployment of approximately 540,000 troops to the front; of these, over 90,000 lost their lives, nearly 60,000 went missing, and more than 330,000 were wounded in combat. Following the liberation of the national territory, the Romanian Army continued to fight in Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Austria alongside Allied forces, making further sacrifices and enduring additional losses, thereby contributing to the great victory achieved on May 9, 1945, which marked the end of the Second World War in Europe, historians note.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elections<\/strong> \u2013 The presidential election is taking place in Bulgaria this Sunday. The frontrunner is the interim president, former left-wing journalist Iliana Iotova, who is backed by the ruling party \u2018Progressive Bulgaria\u2019. This party is considered pro-Russian and is led by Prime Minister Rumen Radev. In neighboring Serbia, also on Sunday, snap parliamentary elections are being held. A new coalition, which defines itself as anti-corruption and is supported by student protesters, is competing against the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). The SNS is led by the populist Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107, who has dominated the political scene in Belgrade for 14 years. Commentators note that under Vu\u010di\u0107, Serbia has made little progress toward its goal of joining the European Union. In Brazil, the largest Latin American nation, the decisive round of the presidential election is also taking place this Sunday. 158 million people are expected to the polls. Opinion polls point to a tight race between the current head of state, South American leftist veteran Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva, who turns 81 this month, and far-right senator Fl\u00e1vio Bolsonaro (45), the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Both candidates are polling at approximately 50% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Handball<\/strong> &#8211; The Romanian women&#8217;s national handball team defeated Croatia 34\u201332 (18\u201316) on Friday evening in an away friendly match held in Zagreb. The two teams will face each other again on Saturday afternoon in a match played behind closed doors. The Romanian side is preparing for the 2026 Women&#8217;s European Handball Championship, which will take place from December 3 to 20 across Romania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Turkey, marking the first time the competition is hosted by five countries. Romania is in Group B alongside the reigning Olympic, World, and European champion, Norway, as well as Switzerland and North Macedonia; matches for this group will be held in Cluj-Napoca (in the northwest). Romania will begin their campaign on December 4 against Norway, followed by a match against North Macedonia on December 6 and Switzerland on December 8. The top two teams from each of the six groups will advance to the main round of the competition.
