DEFENCE The defence ministers and chiefs of general staff from Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey are set to meet in Sofia to discuss security and defence in the Black Sea region, and develop a joint action strategy. The trilateral meeting was announced as early as mid-October. According to Reuters, last week NATO announced the deployment of additional maritime surveillance aircraft, radar systems, and drones to the Black Sea, following a string of drone attacks on vessels in the region, linked to the war Russia is waging in Ukraine. At least 5 cargo ships have been hit off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria over the past 10 days, and 23 sailors are missing or dead.<\/p>\n

CLIMATE EU member states will be required to develop national strategic plans to adapt to a projected rise in global temperatures expected to reach 2\u00b0C by 2050 and 3\u00b0C by 2100, compared to pre-industrial levels. A new climate resilience framework adopted by the European Commission establishes a common reference trajectory for global warming, and for the first time assigns responsibility to member states for proactive measures. Ambassador Vladimir Lipaev was summoned that same day to the foreign ministry, where the Romanian side protested against Russia\u2019s involvement in the incident. Moreover, Ambassador Lipaev labeled attempts to hold Russia responsible for the incidents involving merchant ships in the Black Sea as \u201cpolitical cynicism and hypocrisy.\u201d Bucharest condemned these systematic attacks, which have resulted in casualties, emphasizing that they are violations of international law, jeopardize the safety and freedom of navigation, and affect security at the Black Sea.<\/p>\n

ISRAEL Israel appears to be heading toward political deadlock following Tuesday\u2019s legislative elections, as neither PM Benjamin Netanyahu nor the opposition have managed to secure a majority in the Knesset. Although better placed according to still-partial results, the right-wing bloc remains below the 61-seat majority threshold required to form a government. The parties representing the country\u2019s Arab community, which makes up approximately 20% of the population, could tip the scales, yet both sides have ruled out such collaboration. The situation might work to the advantage of PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who will stay in power at least throughout an interim period.
