US defense official visits Bucharest for security talks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prime Minister Luca Niculescu today met with US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby in Bucharest. Talks focused on concrete ways to deepen the Romania\u2013US Strategic Partnership, with a focus on defense. Their talks highlighted Washington’s decisive role in helping Bucharest navigate increasingly complex regional challenges, alongside the security situation in the Black Sea amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister expressed strong interest in expanding defense industry cooperation with the USA through joint production, maintenance and logistics support projects to strengthen Romania\u2019s defense industrial base. The two officials also examined security issues in the Black Sea, including daily drone incursions and attacks on commercial shipping that threaten freedom of navigation.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Elbridge Colby was received by President Nicu\u0219or Dan, who advocated a reinforced US economic and military presence in Romania. President Dan emphasized that the Black Sea has strategically become one of the most dangerous and unstable maritime regions, facing escalating tensions and severe spillover effects from the war in Ukraine. He recalled that Romania faces a full spectrum of hybrid threats, spanning cyberattacks, sabotage, aerial and maritime drone incursions, provocations, and aggressive disinformation campaigns, and reiterated Bucharest’s need for continued allied support.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Niculescu meets foreign investors to boost economic recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n

Economic recovery is the government’s top priority, Prime Minister Luca Niculescu told foreign investors at a meeting on Wednesday. He thanked investor representatives for their critical role in Romania’s development, emphasizing that rebuilding trust alongside state institutions and domestic businesses is essential to finding effective solutions for the business environment. Foreign direct investment fell by over 62% in the first eight months of this year compared to the same period last year, down from over \u20ac8 billion recorded in the previous year.<\/p>\n

Finance Minister highlights deficit reduction ahead of ECOFIN <\/strong><\/p>\n

Progress in reducing the budget deficit gives Romania a stronger standing in European negotiations, and ongoing fiscal consolidation remains necessary to support the national economy, Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare wrote on Facebook. Minister Nazare announced he held a technical meeting on Wednesday with his ministry team to prepare for the upcoming EU Finance Ministers (ECOFIN) meeting in Brussels, scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, Nazare faces a simple motion of no confidence introduced by the nationalist and sovereignist opposition party AUR, set for debate and vote on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Cernavod\u0103 NPP Unit 1 prepares to reconnect to national grid<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nuclearelectrica has initiated the startup procedure for Unit 1 of the Cernavod\u0103 Nuclear Power Plant (southeast), with resynchronization to the national grid set for Friday. The company confirmed that the reactor will reach its maximum capacity of 620 MW by Saturday. Both of the plant’s units, which supply roughly 20% of Romania’s energy needs, were shut down on July 28 and August 13 due to low water levels in the Danube.<\/p>\n

US Election: Democrats secure Congressional majorities amid Republican Party rift<\/strong><\/p>\n

US Democrats have secured at least 245 seats in the House of Representatives compared to 147 for Republicans, passing the 218-seat majority threshold, according to partial results published by CNN. In the Senate, Democrats have clinched 54 seats over the Republicans’ 44, exceeding the 51-seat majority mark, while two remaining seats remain tightly contested, with the Democratic candidate holding a slim lead in Alaska.<\/p>\n

Following the heavy losses, internal blame has surfaced within the Republican leadership. Vice President JD Vance noted on X that the ongoing war in Iran was the main factor behind the defeat, a post characterized by US media as unusually critical for a sitting vice-president.
